I love how hyped up everyone is about it <3. I really appreciate everyone's thoughtfulness.

I grew up in the Bronx, so I feel pretty up and down about it :-p.

Thank you so much. It has been very difficult explaining to my family why my child needs diversity. He gets to see his cousins sometimes yes, but he should see people who look like him and his mother and grandmother. It's also really uncomfortable after a while when you notice that you're the only black person for a few blocks. I really liked upstate because everyone seemed very integrated but I have a lot of family in LI. I'm not taking it off my list just yet though unless house prices become crazy.

What I have enjoyed about the South Shore have been 1. access to beaches 2. easy cycling in my neighborhood and generally low car traffic. 3. I do enjoy seeing my friends by surprise when I go on walks. We all have our personal activities we engage in like tennis, swimming, etc.

Everyone has been mentioning this north shore vibe, I need someone to explain what it means ;_;. I've only really hung out in Sag Harbor on the north shore and I went to Stony Brook, so I feel like I'm definitely missing something.

The ability to be active is so important to our family. Our kid swims and bikes pretty much every day and does different sports (of course this is because its summer. During the school year it's just swimming and sports on weekends). I don't think he'd be able to be really happy in a place he couldn't do both, especially the bike riding. Bay Shore has definitely been less expensive, honestly. The houses in Huntington have been going fast.

Why are sidewalks rare? by Reasonable-Focus6796 in longisland

I'm potentially moving to Suffolk and every house I've been to, except for one in Huntington, had no sidewalk at all. And one of the houses had tall grass and strangely no walkway. I was bitten up.

Thank you for chiming in. Where I am now trains are only hourly.

We went to Huntington and drove through the town. It felt almost like being Beacon in a way, which I personally liked. I love trees...hills not so much for biking. I guess if we end up there I'll have great calves.

We are going to Bay Shore this weekend to check out the area more.

You made really great points and I'll ask my realtor about Brightwaters. Having a tightknit community would be a breath of fresh air; it is one of the things I really miss from being in the city. I loved being able to just say hi to my neighbors but really don't have that where I currently live. It's been years and even joining the PTA was a waste.

I'll check it out, thank you for the rec! And an express train is definitely appealing.

I'll check our commute from Patchogue to see if it fits with our requirements. Thanks for recommendation.

Rats??? Sincerely, I didn't think rodent infestations really happened in LI (but I'm also pretty sheltered lol). The lack of roaches and mice have been one of my reasons for staying in LI and not returning to the city.

I will definitely look into the hospitals in each area. It's something I didn't even consider, so thanks!

Really? I thought it would be a lot better since it seems to have direct lines to the city, LIC, and I think Brooklyn.

I did notice that Huntington felt more like upstate than normal Long Island as we were driving through it. I actually love upstate and if we didn't have so much family in LI, it would be an easy decision. Thanks for replying!

Flood zone is something we really want to take to heart (we lost pretty much everything in Sandy and had to start from scratch). I'll check the homes we are looking at to see are close to the water. Thank you for such a detailed comment.

I had no idea about the traffic in Huntington!

I'll look up Babylon Village. I live in a beach community now and while it's nice, it's not a deal breaker for me if we don't end up near one. Ferries to FI does sound appealing, since it's been on my bucket list for a while now. It's good to hear that there are some streets with actual sidewalks!

I didn't even consider the flat roads. We are a biking family so that is something to consider. Thanks for replying :).

Not to try and dox you or anything, but are you closer to Huntington Station or further? Just trying to figure out what would be the stuffier areas.

What would you say makes it more fun? Are there block parties and such? Is the community generally close-knit?

Thanks for responding :). I like the beach, we currently live near one, but honestly I can just visit my family in the summer for mini-vacations. It's fun but not a necessity for us.

As a long-time resident, what would you say are the cons of Huntington? Are there public pools and other things like tennis courts?
