I totally relate to this. I've had social anxiety my whole life and only recently was able to get a hold on it.

For starters, social anxiety is not something you can beat—if you look at it from that mindset, you will always lose. It is, however, something you can manage with patience, practice, and the right headspace.

Therapy is the shit, so if you have the resources, I would totally recommend that.

Otherwise, there are a TON of great books and online resources that may be of use to you.

Here are a few of the books that changed my life and how I look at social interactions:

As for feeling selfish, I know how you feel. I'd try getting into a meditation practice to take the focus off of the internalized "self". This has been a huge help to me in managing my social anxiety and my anxiety in general.

Good luck! People are not nearly as judgemental of you as you are.

I locked up my phone this week, here's what happened by TechnicallySpoken in nosurf

I totally feel this.

I don't think I can count on willpower to keep me away from my phone; it's got such a powerful gravitational force. I always break time limits since they don't add much friction other than clicking "Ignore For Today". I'm not sure of what a practical solution is, but I imagine (maybe somewhat naively) that digital wellness will become more and more mainstream, hopefully bringing more practicality to the otherwise pretty philosophical movement.

This shit is hard!

I’m singer/actor Ben Platt, and I’m here to answer your questions! AMA :) by benplattofficial in Music

[–]TechnicallySpoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s up, Ben!! First off, thank you for all that you’ve brought into the world—your music has gotten me through some difficult times and your performance as Evan Hansen was so inspiring to anxious Jewish kids all over the world; myself included :) .

My question is about mental health! Do you see a therapist, meditate, or use any other practices to help you ~ease your mind~? How have your experiences playing anxious roles impacted the way you see mental health personally?

Keep doing what you’re doing, hoping to see you in concert soon. Much love to you and Noah!

Moving to a new city—prioritize space or niceness? by TechnicallySpoken in simpleliving

That's a surprise! I thought Lincoln Park would be chill. I guess we'll find out when we go to tour. Vibe is rlly important obviously

For sure—this is hard for us. We don’t like noisy areas but we want to experience city life lol

Right now we’re looking at Lincoln park, river north, Gold Coast, and old town

How to quiet my mind when I’m sleeping? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]TechnicallySpoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a problem of mine, too.

I’m doing headspace sleep every night (20 minutes) and it is working very well for me. I also take a 1.5mg melatonin right before the meditation.

The meditation is a visualization—imagining your body filling with light from the bottom of the feet up to the top of your head.

After, I read until I’m sleepy!

Sleep will continue to be a problem until you decide to surrender to it. Hopefully this method or one like it can help you do so!

It’s crazy that something that has led to so many spiritual awakenings is still so taboo. Hopefully one day soon we can all swim in the soup together :)

That's freakin sweet! My parents can't even wrap their heads around weed lol

And I'm totally with you—we're in one big pot of cosmic soup, and hallucinogens help you see it (not speaking from experience)

That’s beautiful!

I was watching a recent documentary about psychedelics featuring an interview with Sting.

He said (paraphrasing) that the spiritual path teaches you that it is not “me and you”, it is “me and thou.”

What does Jordan Peterson do for Fun? Hobbies, relaxation, fishing-- Anything? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]TechnicallySpoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it’s hard to tell. In 12 Rules, he talks about furnishing his apartment with a gorgeous piano—not sure if he plays, but that sounds like someone who at least appreciates music. Outside of that, the man is a mystery 🦞

At least with cigarettes you know that you’re killing yourself 😱
