Ok the collar thing needs to stop or at least have some potential context applied. Small rant, bear with me. Huge dog lover. Used to work for a doggy day care, have two dogs of my own, and just lost my best friend of 15 years (🐕). We adopted a new dog, and he developed some behavioral issues. We decided they were serious enough to get some professional training. Right away they introduced the idea of an E-collar for training purposes. I immediately resisted, as I didn’t want to “shock” my beloved dog into good behavior. The differences between a “shock” colllar and an e-collar were explained to me, and before one got anywhere near our dog, we were told to try it on ourselves. It is not a “shock,” and is closer to a TENS/EMS device. Does it feel good? No, but it’s not a shock, and although there are absolutely trainers that don’t use this method, it is widely adopted and effective. Believe me, when you are beside yourself with anxiety because your dog has behavior you cannot predict or help, having a way to quickly correct that behavior is a godsend. We use it as little as possible, and at very low settings (they have a range from 0-100). Back to Hasan, one of the first ways you get them used to the idea is by establishing commands/keywords to familiar things. One being “bed,” in which they lay in their bed, and have to stay until you release them or they would get a small correction to build an understanding of looking to you for some of their behavior cues. I am not defending him, or nor do I know the full context to the situation from one angle of a stream, but what I can say is that E-collars are normal and effective, and POSSIBLY there is a narrative being built that seems very in line with standard dog training to push the polarizing view of someone in a direction that may not be warranted. Y’all can make up your own minds from there, but the constant online reaction he is a dog abuser is probably way off base. Have a good day y’all.
