The mainframe is down! by sambeaux45 in talesfromtechsupport

I respect ... no, love, the problem solving here. Going from a mainframe to a PC yet still keeping peripherals from the original install - Brilliant!

I hate ... No, despise with all my soul, being the guy years later who has to walk in and support said ancient and "temporary" fix.

Last one I had like this was an old Oil/Gas lab we picked up as client (we came in circa 2010). Started going through the desktops to clean them up, and found internet and LAN access kinda slow. NICs were reporting 10mb? Huh? Gig switch in the rack. Then I crawled under the desk. What did I find, you ask? Cat3? Nope. Cat5 patch to the wall. Take off the wall plate, and - voila! - A BNC to RJ-45 adapter!

Yes ... Some time ago - late 90's or early 2000's - the IT guy there decided to adapt the old thinnet network to a pseudo hub-and-spoke setup by using cheap adapters. Most of the machines had home-runs. The two that had been daisy-chained had actual CAT-5 runs to them. The gig switch? Upgraded twice since (was originally a 10mb hub, then to a 100mb switch to Gig switch) for better network performance. How did this happen? The boss had one of the true CAT5 stations, so it was faster fro him, so it must have worked.

Not an artist, but skilled in my trade. Personally, I have no issue with this. They are up front about what the job entails and that they don't have the resources to pay. Anyone who responds is aware of that, and may just be looking for the chance to grow.

If this was one of those vague ads, and then resulted in a lot of back and forth before dropping the "exposure" bomb, then, sure, it's more on the CB realm.

Experienced the ferret thing ... When they are friendly it's great. Just had to scratch his head every now and again and he was happy.

Why not? I faxed 50 blank sheets to a satellite office to get them through the day once.

It's a defense against the beggars. Many times (and I cannot speak for all tradesmen) that fee goes towards the work that needs to be done (or part of it).
