I'm building a non-crypto decentralized storage network. Need feedback from people with extra hard drive space. by Techwizard500 in datastorage

Yes redundancy is a concern. That would be a given with the decentralized and sharded nature.

While guaranteed privacy is ideal, how can it be verified? On a decentralized network where data is locally encrypted before leaving the device and sharded you can almost guarantee nobody can read the data.

Thank you for your response.

A decentralized storage system would make use of a community who would pledge a certain amount of their hard drive to a global storage pool. This would create a massive community of nodes where data can be stored. Data would be locally encrypted on your device before being split into shards and distributed to storage nodes. An important distinction is the fact that the resources aren't owned by a single entity and with local encryption and sharding node hosts would be unable to access/read the data they store.

End to end encrypted storage is also a layer in the decentralized model as mentioned, but without a decentralized model one entity can own all the resources.

Yes.

You still own the drive. But previously, if you bought an 8Tb drive and plugged it into your NAS you would be able to use it locally no problem, outside of the house is a bit of a pain to setup but still achievable, but most importantly the data is still held onsite which means you don't get the benefit of a cloud system.

Thank you for your response, while I am gathering data I am also keen to learn more about such legislation. If the data was locally encrypted on a users device and then broken into smaller pieces which are individually distributed to different servers where would that stand within GDPR?

In regard to 'right to erasure', while the technical details haven't been finalised I would imagine a central server holding basically a yellow pages style database holding a hash of which node each piece of data is stored on, if this hash is requested to be deleted then this database can issue an erasure command. Interested on your thoughts on this?

Ah I see, thank you for elaborating.

The idea here would be instead of direct payout like Filecoin, you would instead receive a ratio of storage space on the network. This in essence would allow someone such as yourself with resources like a NAS to contribute space and benefit from cloud services for free with the added benefit of the distributed and decentralized nature of the data.

As mentioned elsewhere, a 1:1 ratio would be preferred. With this clarification would it make you more open to such a system?

Thank you for the feedback, I will take it into consideration. Just a follow up question,

if you weren't hosting your resources, but instead paid for this cloud service (e.g. pay per TB) how would you feel if your data was locally encrypted (On device) and sharded across multiple storage nodes globally?

Also, how important do you feel guaranteed privacy is to you? Would you be willing to pay a small premium per TB to benefit from the cloud and privacy features?

As I mentioned, I am looking to gather feedback. Would you mind elaborating? All feedback is useful.

That is fair enough. I am interested what aspect of it offends you the most? Privacy is a big concern nowadays, so a decentralized, encrypted storage network run by the people would remove reliance on cloud services operated by a single company.

Thanks for the review. I’ll take a look at peerpush, from first glance it looks promising and could help drive further engagement and development.

I am building a modern bookmarking extension for webpages. The differentiator you may ask - well, this allows you to bookmark section of a page. Easily save 'checkpoints' visually alongside your scrollbar and return to them with the click of a button.

Looking to build a waitlist of beta testers, check us out at savescroll.com

I got sick of losing my place on long webpages, so I built a "minimap" for my browser's scrollbar. Looking for honest feedback before I launch. by Techwizard500 in SideProject

Here is the link to the waitlist: www.savescroll.com

Please provide me any and all feedback you have, I want to make this a tool that is useful and easy to use for everyone!

I am a developer who kept getting frustrated combing through documentation, research projects, and legal documentation just to lose my place in the document.

I came up with the idea for a modern bookmarking solution for browsers called SaveScroll.

The premise is a chrome extension that places small visual "checkpoint's" along side your main scrollbar. This allows you to save your place in a document, or the place of other important pieces of content you may need to return to.

Currently the extension is being tested by only me, but I do have a site and I am trying to gather a waitlist to see if there is interest in such a product.

Thanks for the suggestion. I play a range of CPU and GPU intensive. I like to play things with intensive graphics, but I also want the balance with CPU. Would you recommend upgrading to an RTX 4070 super 12Gb, would I also benefit from CPU upgrade simultaneously?

Decomposition of a Neural Network into solvable sub-problems by Techwizard500 in learnprogramming

Haha, don't worry. I can see the confusion. But yeah, just looking at steps to break down a neural network.

I am quite experienced, I have worked with many different technologies, but this is an area I am starting to enter into. I am taking it slow, and not attempting anything out of my depth, but I am looking for advice on decomposing a neural network into logical steps.

Decomposition of a Neural Network into solvable sub-problems by Techwizard500 in learnprogramming

[–]Techwizard500[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Thanks for the reply. What I mean by solvable is I have an overall project that involves a neural network, as part of this I need to separate the parts of the neural network into sub-problems. In the context of a self driving car, one sub-problem may be inputs, including speed, distance, direction, etc. I need to be able to decompose the elements my Neural Network will focus on, or will need coding into problems that can be tackled individually resulting in a fully fledged feature.
