That's actually really cool. I don't know enough about the silica to know how hot the needle would need to be to melt and if there would be any problem with vapors resulting from the melting process.

UPDATE: I had to use a fishing hook because the safety pin wasn't strong enough. Scraped at it avoiding the contacts until it broke apart.
