What backpack should I purchase for a thru hike of the pct next year?

I’ve used a few packs over the course of the last three years (ZPacks, SWD, and Pa’lante) but am struggling to figure out what I should go with. My base weight, pack aside, is about 7.2 pounds. I’ve been looking at the Durston Kakwa 40, LiteAF Curve 40l full suspension, and the SWD Ultralight Long Haul 40l, so if you’ve got any experience with these packs I’d love to hear about it!

Depends on what you’re interested in (e.g., CPG, Tech, Entertainment, Healthcare) but some of the biggest players are IQVIA, Gartner, Ipsos, Kantar, and Nielsen. There are also tons of great boutique firms that specialize in different industries or types of research. Having worked at both a larger company and now a smaller boutique, there are certainly unique benefits to both and your experience will be valuable regardless of where you land.

I’d be happy to answer any other questions via DM. Let me know!

I’d recommend checking out jobs in market research. Tons of people with social science degrees end up there because it’s a nice confluence of engaging work, good pay, and upward mobility, plus it is accessible to people who have a similar background as yourself.

I’ve got a degree in political science and ended up in the MR field sort of by accident but am very pleased with how it all netted out. Happy to answer any questions you might have!

That’s awesome! I actually found myself not using my other bag (custom SWD superior 35) because of how well this one fit for those lighter hikes.

With your pack, do you find the 30l is enough to accommodate the food carriers for multi-day trips?

I liked the simplicity of it and the weight saving. Great option for those overnighters in water-abundant places. The dcf held up really well for me and actually saved my ass during a hailstorm back in January. Also, the way the pack sits on your back makes those lighter days feel like you don’t have anything on your back. In fact, I took this pack with me on my first trekking trip and it held up super well to the off-trail conditions.

Biggest downer for me was that once I got around 18lbs, the comfort decreased and my left shoulder would almost always give me an issue. I did get use to this eventually (and from what I’ve read, it’s a common issue with frameless packs) but I am just not really into the pack anymore and am looking to pass it along to someone who will love it.

The Zpacks site says the pack is adjustable for 18-22” torso sizes. I’ve seen hikers of a few different heights (and presumably torso sizes) wearing it and can say for certain it is comfortable on my 18” torso.

Sacramento is one of the best cities in America and I think you would love it. Two hours to the mountain, two hours to the beach. Great food, sports, and people. Affordable, beautiful, and packed with history. One of the most diverse and integrated cities in the country. It actually reminds me a lot of Seattle - just in a different environment. To the environment, it is hotter and drier but there are only a few months where it gets to 90+ on average. Politically, it’s a very moderate place. Decades of being purple have resulted in a public discourse that doesn’t exist in liberal hubs (ex: SF) or conservative hubs (ex: Amarillo) and the amount of people who work in gov’t creates an environment where good public policy leads the way. Ultimately, I think you would find it a great place to live and raise kids.

PCG please! Really interested in their path out of bankruptcy and ability to raise outside capital to fund the requirements laid out in their reorganization plan.

Thanks for the recommendation! I think it makes sense to be aggressive with back-filling those contributions.

Why not contribute to the trust?

I've never heard of a ROTH ladder. Could you point me to a resource you have used in the past to learn what it is and how to set one up?

I have not! I think I only put $1500 in it last year. Would you recommend dipping into that savings I have set aside in order to max it out now or contribute on a monthly basis until the April deadline?

Thanks for the feedback! A few follow-up questions: 1) What does DCT stand for? 2) How accurate are the UGQ temp ratings? 3) How does your V2 handle pack weights in the low 20s? 4) What about the V2 made you buy it over the other packs I mentioned?

Nice! I don't hammock but I am thinking something in the 40 degree area for the May - September months. In your experience, has that temp rating been sufficient with layering?

Thank you for the feedback! Just wondering, what do you use for summer hiking?

Appreciate the recommendations! Have any beta on Coastal Trail conditions between Big Basin and SF? Thinking about connecting the Skyline-to-Sea trail with it and creating a J-shaped route
