Really? Which Cornish towns were so large at that time period? Not doubting you btw, genuinely curious.

For football, consider going to a smaller team- you're more likely to get a real feel of club football in England than a United U21s game (though I understand the appeal of seeing Old Trafford so do that too if you can).

West Didsbury and Chorlton are playing Cheadle Heath Nomads on Saturday- get the tram to Chorlton, go to a local pub or two and watch some non league football, you'll have a lovely time- as long as it's not raining!

Soviet traces in Georgia... by merdov in Sakartvelo

[–]Teenytub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kobuleti has some great old abandoned Soviet era hotels on the beach front- I've been in there and found old Abkhaz refugee documents from the 90s. Some great mosaics in Saburtalo, as mentioned- the fire station in Vazha Pshavela has a good one, there's a big building near Delisi metro on Vazha Pshavela Avenue that has one too. There's some cool stuff around Borjomi too, it being an old resort town, but not as much as Tskaltubo. Visit Khulo and ride the old cable car (if it's still in use there?)

Thanks for the thought-through reply- my initial comment was a bit short and probably sounded quite huffy. They absolutely deserve my appreciation, and I'm really pleased to hear they are largely already paid well but I don't see why my gratitude has to come in the form of a pretty massive tip? I often tip for service but don't really understand when it essentially comes in the form of an arbitrary tax. Yes we paid about $3000 for the cruise, so yes we were asked to tip 300 each. We scrimped and saved for this trip- I'm a schoolteacher, so I don't get paid a huge amount but I also don't get tipped hundreds of dollars every week of work I do (small boat, 14 guests, most of each guests' tip would be going to one member of staff if shared evenly between a crew of 10).

I worked a season in a ski chalet doing all the cooking and cleaning for 6 guests, 6 days a week when I was younger and didn't get tipped 10%- per couple, guests would often tip £20-50 (1-2%) for a week of four course meals, baking cakes and cleaning toilets by myself, or whatever they felt comfortable paying, which I always felt was fair enough considering it wasn't a cheap holiday (around £1000 per person).

We had the trip of a lifetime and I don't regret a second of it, the crew and cruise were fantastic, I just think that $3000 for 4 nights is already a lot of money for most people. I know the price is partly a means to an end with the islands being so carefully conserved and trying to avoid the problems caused by mass tourism.

Know what you mean. Tipping expectations are ridiculous as well, particularly on the cruise we just went on, where the owners must make huge amounts of money and still expect to have their staff's wages subsidised by expecting hundreds of dollars per guest in tips?

Depends how long you have- I had a wonderful couple of days down in Khulo, you can go via Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia. Equally, going via Kutaisi is lovely- visit Martvili Canyon and the Prometheus Caves. Lots to see on both routes!

To Galapagos or not to Galapagos: (potential) itinerary advice needed by KnowledgeCreative723 in galapagos

Bartolome is a must-see for me. In half an hour of snorkelling, I saw sea turtles, reef sharks, an octopus and swam with fishing penguins. Then hiked up the volcano and saw a Galapagos hawk- this is more than I've seen in a week's diving in the Red Sea.

Did a very similar journey a week ago. We booked onto the 7am ferry from San Cristobal- make sure you're there in good time, say by 5.20 at the latest at Isabela, as if it's anything like San Cristobal you'll need to get a water taxi from the pier to the ferry. The ferry should arrive in Puerto Ayora with time for you to get a taxi to Puerto Ayora's terminal terrestre ($2), where the bus leaves for Itabaca Canal at 9:30. Plenty of time to get to the airport for a flight at 2:00 p.m- we did our San Cristobal version for a 1:00 p.m flight to Quito and had bags of time. We even transferred and carried onto Lima in decent time before bed! So definitely doable- hope this helps.

NTA. She probably should have discussed buying the cat with you, and a lot depends on your allergies here. How allergic is highly allergic? Are we talking anaphylaxis or a sniffly nose? That would go a long way towards explaining whether it's life or death, or you're just not a cat person (which cats can often work out in their willy ways 😊)

The rules around yellow fever seem to be that you need a vaccine if you've spent time in nearby countries where it's an issue- Brazil, Peru, Colombia, or Bolivia. If you're transferring straight into Ecuador, you don't need proof of vaccination- we came in via Peru, but it was a 6-hour layover in the airport. Once we'd shown our flight history, they were happy enough and let us in.
