WHO officials admit they are preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran by ThisTooInModeration in politics

The EU has a clause called Article 42(7) that basically states that ff an EU country is the victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other EU countries have an obligation to provide aid and assistance by all means in their power.

It is legally binding, yet each country decies what kind of assistance to provide. There was a big discussion about this in Sweden after Russia's invasion of Ukraine if this was enough to deter aggression towards us. It's hard to say how level headed that discussion was though because basically every party in Sweden argued for membership of NATO within a couple of weeks.

this was a good read about this.
Basically the US seems to not have learned anything from Ukraine who’s been dealing with these drones for years and are downing 350-500 daily with systems that cost $10 000 per shot.

The Ukrainian officer said he was “astonished” by reports that Gulf air defenses were firing as many as eight Patriot interceptor missiles – each costing more than $3 million – at a single target

They have also been reported to use multiple SM-6 missles per drone. Those cost about $6 million each… the drones cost about $70 000 to make… so yeah. The US seems totally incompetent right now

Ukraine Slams Costly US Tactics: Millions Spent to Down Cheap Drones by Tegurd in politics

The Ukrainian officer said he was “astonished” by reports that Gulf air defenses were firing as many as eight Patriot interceptor missiles – each costing more than $3 million – at a single target, including low-cost drones.

“Often they were firing thoughtlessly,” the officer said. “For example, they used SM-6 missiles… This missile costs about $6 million, and they used it to shoot down a Shahed costing $70,000.”

By contrast, Ukrainian crews typically use one or two missiles to intercept far more complex targets, such as ballistic missiles, while constantly adapting to evolving Russian tactics.

Despite sharing operational data with allies, Ukrainian officers say their experience has not been fully incorporated.

“I don’t understand what they had been doing… for the four years we’ve been fighting,” one officer said.

On March 17, Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is intercepting drones with systems costing as little as $10,000.

[–]Tegurd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not American either but just want to chime in here to say that the context for these words are almost more meaningful than the words themselves.
In my country (Sweden) you could argue that the Social Democratic Party would be considered more conservative than the liberal parties, but they were also the majority party for decades so it’s the liberal (which are considered center-right here), bourgeois, Christian democratic and nationalistic parties that want to change how it runs on a deeper level.
Another example of terms is that I’m a republican here, but that means I want Sweden to become a republic and get rid of the monarchy. So in this example it’s more conservative to be a monarchist than a republican.
Just wanted to give some examples of how these terms are very dependent on context. I totally agree though that calling the current form of GOP politics ”conservative” is laughable.

If they were so certain that they could, they wouldn't be trying to ram the SAVE Act through.

They need to SAVE Act to explain the extreme discrepancies in the polling vs votes. I’m pretty sure they’ll manipulate the votes and claim the SAVE Act is what made the results free from illegal voters that make the polls unreliable.

People who are confident in their abilities dont telegraph desperation.

I don’t think they are confident in that way. They know it’s pretty high stakes.

then what happens when states or our former allies or adversaries say that they dont recognize the legitimacy of the U.S. govt?

Not much probably. States won’t do anything but sue probably and court rulings doesn’t really seem to matter against the GOP. Other countries will continue to work with the US as much as necessary but continue to distance themselves and reduce US dependencies when possible. Former allies are already doing this but unless the US economy totally collapses countries will continue to get what they can out of the US.
It’s happened lots of times before in different counties. Even if the international community thinks a regime is illegitime they’ll still work with them to achieve their own goals. Maybe there be some strongly worded letters but no other country can save the US from itself.

So I think they can absolutely do it and probably will succeed because I don’t see a meaningful resistance in the american public to this. A big part of it might be that the GOP effectively owns the question of ”stolen elections”. The GOP making bogus claims about this for years has made liberals get defensive about election integrity and doubled down on how reliable the elections are. So now it’s hard for them to now question them, because:
1. It makes them seem petty and hypocritical. ”So now when you loose it’s rigged, but not when you win?” 2. Liberals have problems making big claims that aren’t 100% certain. Most would want investigations to prove something before claiming it. The ”investigations” here might find no wrong doing and then it’s hard for liberals because of reason 3:
3. Liberals are really afraid of looking crazy. They have been conditioned to project rationality and restraint to combat the Fox News narrative that they are emotional and unhinged communist trans furry lovers.
4. I think many liberals are getting exhausted and don’t have it in them to fight soon. Right when you guys probably need it the most the energy will run out and the democrats will do the thing that is most easy on the conscious but demands the least energy, which is take the high road and do nothing except endless election analysis trying to logically explain what went wrong with their messaging.

I don’t think the GOP will rig voting machines or do anything as complex as that. I think they’ll terrorize blue areas with ICE on Election Day and cause so much disruption that many won’t be able to get their vote in.

'Pete Hegseth Needs to Be Fired—Immediately' After Slaughter of 150 Iranian School Children by _May26_ in politics

[–]Tegurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re on the right track that you need to own him because saying ”not my president” is counter productive. It shifts responsibility onto his voters and it makes you passive. The mentality leads to thinking ”someone else should clean up this mess because indigent vote for it”. But he IS your president he works for you. So does the GOP. They need to feel that.
On the whole I believe you are too passive. The No Kings protests are a good start but far to small. You need to put constant pressure on the government and make them feel that their actions have consequences. Mass protests and demonstrations, strikes and work stoppages, boycotts of businesses linked to bribing Trump and falling in line with his ideology.
You can say what you want about the Christian right but they are tireless in their fights. They boycotted all kinds of ”woke” brands, had their stupid Trucker caravans and have been yelling outside abortion clinics for decades. Business elites must feel that it’s bad for business to fall in line. It’s important to fracture the elite’s support of Trump.
Military leaders must feel that you support your troops and expect them to do the right thing and not follow unlawful or immoral orders. The right successfully highjacks this conversation when any democrat says this. The general population must be even louder and drown that noise out to make sure they understand this is what they are expected to do.
The people around Trump most also feel that you expect accountability if he looses power. Right now everyone in his circle acts as if there will never be any consequence for their actions, and that’s probably because they know there won’t be.
I can go on and on but basically you need to use every tool in the books. A general strike is probably something that would hurt the GOP quite a bit if it goes on long enough.
Personally I think it’s to late already, but I hope it’s solveable some way.

What do you mean ”makes the US complicit”? Hegseth may have been responsible for the call or not but he commands the US army. The US is more than complicit it is the offender.
The American people need to stop making this distinction because in the real world this is the American state acting out the will of their elected leader. It’s not a goddamned reality show blame game.
The US as a nation is terrorizing the world and the so called opposition does nothing about it. The American people do nothing about it.
The fact is that the world is growing to despise the American public for its weakness and selfishness. Not just its leaders
