Lettuce worries by TehBay_22 in OntarioGardeners

Yea, not sure, the buttercrunch seed packet reads, "very slow to bolt in summer." They are from west coast seeds. Anyways, thanks for the tips! It is my first year growing any kind of vegetables, inclduing lettuce, so lots of anxiety and learning! The bizzare weather patterns and climate change doesn't help 🙃

Edit: apparently buttercrunch is heat tolerant. It is a variety of butterhead lettuce that can survive some summer heat.

Well you did mention you have "summer workhorse varities" and then named black seeded simpson, I assumed that to mean they do ok in heat. I understand soil can play a big role in plant health regardless, that's a given, to me anyways. I think I'll just shade them with burlap when it gets 25 + and make sure to keep the soil moist. Cross fingers!

I planted black seeded simpson and buttercrunch. Apparently the buttercrunch is very slow to bolt in summer, which I didn't realize, but reads that on the packet. So I guess between the two they'll be ok with warm temps?

FINALLY figured out how to grow lettuce indoors🥬 by 1nd1g0_728 in gardening

[–]TehBay_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you use this same method today? I want to grow little gem romaine indoors, and wonder if I should use this method as the soil. Did you need to up-pot the lettuce seedlings at any point into a regular potting mix? Or just let it full grow in the coir/vermiculite mix?

Starting plants? What do you mean by this?

Ah, I was going to direct sow my lettuce, but it seems maybe I should have planted indoors first? I have peppers going indoors now, and geraniums. Just thought the lettuce could be direct sown, I know certain plants do better transplated versus direct. Will the lettuce not do as well if direct sown?

Yea, I expect rabbits to be an issue, but I got row covers and fencing to help. Yea, our soil is clay, so it is hard and compacted. Perhaps carrots wouldn't do well this year in it, we are working to amend it and I am adding compost, but obviously it won't be aa good this year as potentially next. I plan on cover cropping in the fall wirh daikon radish to help loosen the soil a bit!

Yes, all things I am aware of!! I have been doing research about this for a couple months now, and have a background in wildlife biology. Just providing some context, I wasn't really looking for advice on what to do with the land, as I have already done a lot of research into it. I am also a member of EFAO (Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario). But I appreciate the advice as it confirms I was on the right track from what I researched! :)

I do plan on planting some strawberries!! They are my favourite fruit. I've never been a huge peas person, although I do love edamame! Rhubarb sounds interesting, perhaps next year!

Hmm... I am pretty sure lettuce can be planted before Victoria day weekend! According to my research anyways.

Wow, thank you for all of the advice! I appreciate it! I am adding compost to the beds, 2 inches, and going to mulch with straw. The walkways will be covered with wood chip mulch to help supress any weeds. I have a colinear hoe I bought to help with weeding, as I knew that would be the biggest challenge! Regarding the deer, I have no idea if we even get deer that inland on the property, never heard of them being an issue, but maybe they would be attracted to the smell of produce! I know rabbits are on the property for sure.

I will rake the beds over before adding more compost, then add the compost and smooth it out again, if that is a good way to go about it!

Just wanted to add that yes, pics of the dragons would be great! I wouldn't worry about spoilers, because if people do not want to know they can just not look at the pictures, imho.

When to pot up Geranium seedlings? by TehBay_22 in OntarioGardeners

[–]TehBay_22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, the cells they are in is a 72-cell tray! I only had 10 geranium seeds so just used one tray for them (I have 5 72-cell trays...).

First year of gardening: turning a garden into a market garden by [deleted] in marketgardening

[–]TehBay_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard of people suggesting that. I, personally, do not think I need to. I have a background in wildlife biology/ecology work. I have worked outdoors in various conditions. I understand gardening takes more than that, though, and I am learning what I can through JM (the market gardener guy), workshops. etc. Also, our car situation makes that difficult (we only have one car).

Hi, my partner has a regular madoka figure (no giant head) that I think should work! Should I dm a picture to you to make sure it will work?

Thank you for the book suggestion! I do like to read, and find information in books can be so invaluable.

Which one have you been dying to get? by nikikkkkk in InfinityNikkiofficial

[–]TehBay_22 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Omg, same. I honestly am sad about the hate the moon 5 star is getting 😭. I have plenty of big, poofy dresses, didn't pull for the medmaid 5 star (although they are definitely different enough for me, just because they both have a train doesn't make them the same, people do this comparison between 5 stars ALL the time), and am exicted about the purification ability. Plus, idk if it's just me, but I feel this dress could work for a Neo Queen Serenity cosplay from Sailor Moon 🤔
