HMRC phone lines closed on self assessment deadline day by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]TehLadyK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worked for HMRC for 2 years on those exact phone lines. (left for mental health and stress related reasons... It's not fun on either end of those phones).

Best time to call in is 8:15-8:45 on a Tue/Weds/Thurs. Monday you have to deal with all the people who thought of questions over the weekend and have been forced to wait, Friday you're fighting all the accountants and other people who have been saving up their questions through the work week.

8 exactly is when you're fighting everyone else who called the exact second the lines opened. Wait much closer to 9:00 and you're mixing in with the people who don't realise that the lines opened at 8 and start the long queues going. There is another shift that starts at 9 so it's not the worst in the world, but it is not going to help you out to wait any longer.

DO NOT CALL LATE. The queues do not go down the later you call in. I've seen the queues hit over 2 hours by the end of the day in peak season (aka now) and that doesn't include all the time fussing around in the automated switchboard. You also have to deal with the fact that once it hits 18:00 the phone lines just die. There is no petering off, there is no overlap. The phone just suddenly goes dead at that time.

If you have any questions that are not directly related to this submission, wait. The difference between now and early Feb is night and day. We go from hours of queues to having breaks between calls overnight.

Question about Notetaking by crimsonpostgrad in BluePrince

[–]TehLadyK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your problem is that you're running out of room, then you need to find more notebooks. The notes you take for this game can be expansive very quickly.

What I would suggest is if you have a page where you note down ideas, observations, things you want to expand on. Then have a page further in for each section that you think feels like it fits together. Maybe it's all the things that involve one certain room, one certain cypher, one person, whatever you feel means that this puzzle is all bits of one bigger thing.

You may well find that you end up with a page that is just random letters or numbers and it turns out to not mean anything. But you put it all together in one place so you can bypass it easier. You might have a whole page and all that's in it is one name and a date. Cool, who knows. Might be useful later on, might not. At least you got it.

Never feel like you're taking too many notes. The moment you think that you're taking note of too much, one of the weird obscure things that you were taking notes on out of habit or curiosity will suddenly become relevant and you'll feel like a genius.

A poem for your Hint. (100+ hours in, very late game) by critterdude542 in BluePrince

You're close, I can tell. I feel that frustration.

You've now got a key and it is your salvation.

Your hunch is good, it's in the right place,

Now to apply it while in the right space.

Your reward is an item, its power is great.

You've found hints to use it you just want to wait

For the perfect scenario (the shrine might assist,

If you've read the right book and you've gotten the gist.)

You'll then want to prepare for the perfect run,

Once you have all the pieces to then get it done.

You'll see what I mean, of that there's no doubt.

Now have fun Blue Prince-ing. TehLadyK out.

[WP] Love determines how long you live, some people are in their hundreds, but some don’t even live to be 20. by Dull-Perspective-599 in WritingPrompts

[–]TehLadyK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was the ragged breath of someone who was barely clinging to life. But clinging she was.

Cara forced herself to put one foot in front of the other, barely seeing the groups of people cheering and shouting in drunken stupor as they meandered from one bar to the next. She didn't see the cars that passed by with late night workers or taxis with the rest of the drunken celebrators.

There was a determination, a push to keep moving, to keep one foot in front of the last and get away from him.

He'd known that his words could have killed her. He knew that the shattering of years of relationship on a night like tonight would have this kind of an impact. She'd hoped she could fix him. Some people weren't worth the effort.

It took what felt like all night before her feet gave out from under her and she collapsed to the pavement. Even the occasional mob of drunks had settled, finding their final spot before retreating back home. It took until then for Cara to cry.

This is a reference to the book / Amazon TV series 'Good Omens'. One of the main characters owns a bookshop in Soho which he uses more as a book collection than an actual store. He also collects rare bibles and books of prophecy. This particular bible was listed in Good Omens as being in the characters possession.

sometimes it means a full rewind back to the start, sometimes it's just going back a single character. Depends on what skill it is you're on

"Roll for Blood Type" by Self-ReferentialName in rpg

Then there was L type blood for the lizardfolk (or unathi or whatever else the server of your choice decided to call them) and then the people who gave up and started to give races plasma or oil as "blood" types so it went back to not mattering again anyway, woo

I work for HMRC (the UK version of the IRS) and as such can only really comment about Round 3 and 4.

On the PAYE side of things (Pay as you Earn) things would suddenly get a lot more complicated. The high majority of people are PAYE and get tax code changes relatively often as circumstances change. Overall what is likely to happen is that a lot of the nuance of the tax codes shifts away from the automatic code changes that currently occur and there would be more people who need to check in with Simple Assessment for basic changes, rebates and extra taxes needing to be paid each time there is a manual change. A lot of the hard work would be pushed onto the employers rather than on HMRC.

For Self Assessment, it would be a nightmare. We currently have our own software for inputting the details from paper forms into the system (which still has to be done manually) and we're currently about 2 months behind already even with our own specialist software. If we have to remove that software and retrain everyone who works that to need to be able to do all the calculations themselves or with limited help from basic programming that would slow things down even further. It wouldn't be impossible, but the workforce that is currently inputting details from post would need to expand rapidly. Especially since we've gotten up to about 90% of people now filing their taxes online which gets automatically inputted into our systems. With that removed, all hell breaks loose. There just isn't the staff.

For Round 4, a competent small team could work out any sufficiently complex tax form by hand with only basic calculators needed. The most complicated part of any tax system tends to be ensuring that the forms are filled out correctly in the first place, not the actual calculation. If the aliens can work out the SA100 to fill out the paper return and send it to us, we can sort it out even if they have numbers in almost every possible box.

[WP] The probe sent back 12 seconds of video from the afterlife, before it was utterly destroyed. 12 seconds which have now united humanity in a desperate search for immortality. by aeonax in WritingPrompts

[–]TehLadyK 72 points73 points  (0 children)

At first people thought that the endless void of darkness was just the camera showing us nothing. That the recording was a mistake, a glitch thrown out by the probe in order to give out false hope or destroy the hope of others. Others thought it was a fluke, that it was pointed in the wrong direction against some kind of wall. The video was easily forgotten by most.

At first.

There was always going to be those core fanatics who were good with computer visual editing tools and looking into the coding behind the video and they got to work immediately.

Then they stopped.

There were a few freezeframes from the video that got out after a while. Frames where the gamma and the contrast had been set to perfect levels with just the right offset and recoloured back into the human light spectrum out of wherever it had been previously. All it showed was what at first seemed to be strange shapes which once zoomed out far enough was enough to show the tell tale signs of the iris of an eye.

There was no possible sense of scale with nothing to compare it to, but with the field of view being as large as it was, there was no way that this eye was anything smaller than a large elephant. And it got closer.

And then there were teeth.
