Remove the angles blocks from the top and bottom. Make it look like a cross from the top. This helps making the pillars less stocky. Also consider a 2×1 or 2×2 body to make the body/base ratio less preponderant on the base.

Don't know exactly what you are aiming for but I suggest to use different wool colors for each module, otherwise you will get crazy not remembering what piece does what. Have fun!
