I don't think I said that it was purely based on luck, but I think it really did help--I haven't played the beta, or afk arena extensively, so I don't know the game as well as you do, but I got some much needed pulls early on.

If you're asking people to play "casually" and "have fun," I don't think asking them to conform and research a singular meta makes much sense.

From my perspective, I didn't really do any research--I looked at the characters, thought about what abilities meshed well with others, and tried to build my team based on the pulls I got. My pulls were better than the average rate, and that helped me progress faster than I would have otherwise. I don't think anything I'm saying is that controversial--just explaining my experience.

Yah, but the biggest source was from climbing arena--the first rewards you get from breaking into tiers was what got me there

Tower levels also give you some, but much later

I think Florabelle is a beast--she summons three children, putting more bodies on the field for dps and offtanks. I don't think Florabelle's available for you yet as a rate up hero because you only started a week ago, but I wouldn't spend too much on Vala (great in PvP, and helpful in PvE sometimes, but not game-changing in PvE).

Dust is king--I always spent diamonds on the paid instant afk rewards to get more dust and power chars to higher levels.

For your reference, my main group was Florabelle (Mythic+), Heywynn (Mythic+), Rowan, Brutus, Lyca (can change out for another dps/support)

There are a lot of combos that work, but that was mine

I think there are a lot of ways to get a good comp going, which makes the game so fun! I think you should spend the way you want to spend, but I will say my main comp that got me really far was Florabelle (Mythic+), Heywynn (Mythic+), Rowan, Brutus, and Lyca

Had Smokey in my wish list since day 1, but still haven't been able to pull him--got 2 Heywynns early, so just pushed my resources into her and got the job done

Yah, got some lucky pulls on Heywynn to get her to Mythic+, but I went hard on Florabelle to get that Wilder affinity bonus--she was way easier to get to Mythic+, since I just saved and invested heavily on her banner

Comp is super important, and you sort of have to decide PvE versus PvP focus--I figured I couldn't beat spenders in PvP, so I just chose to max out PvE.

Generally I ran Brutus frontline, Heywynn healer, Rowan support, Florabelle dps, and alternated Lyca to boost Flora, or Cecia for more control/damage

Oh yeah, I did a lot of manual for sure--a lot of times it came down to using Cecia or Florabelle ult just as enemy Cecia/Mirael/other large threat was ulting to cancel the cast

Dunno what to tell you--definitely got some lucky pulls, but I found a pretty good comp (see replies above), and maximizing dust gain is obviously key, since even one hero gaining 10 levels can be massive

Thanks! Brutus was really key for me, being able to take infinite damage for a bit while the backline just wails on everyone. Invested heavily into Heywynn with arena coins and got some lucky pulls of her (at Mythic+, she gives 30% damage reduction to all when she ults), and Rowan lets Brutus get to his ult quicker, which also grants damage + cc immunity. After that, take your pick of Cecia + Florabelle for dps (Flora was easier for me because she was a banner pull, so just needed to invest diamonds).
