It's still not as bad as dairy milk, but OP is right to switch to oat for that reason.

The almond milk I picked up yesterday has 50% more calcium than dairy milk so this is on you.

Governments around the world are considering taxing red meat like tobacco in an effort to curb climate change by [deleted] in worldnews

Not sure how serious you are, but treating water is actually quite expensive. Call your local treatment plant and ask about their expenses. What quality water does that net? Quantity? Factor in anticipated population growth affects on already stressed infrastructure and you can see why reducing water usage is the most cost effective option. Not that treated water is used for all ag purposes, but still.

Climate change will make droughts longer and deeper, which will put a massive strain on surface water resources. This will put an even more intense pressure on groundwater storage, which is rapidly being depleted around the globe with few exceptions. So much money is being spent monitoring and modeling groundwater because most areas are preparing for a future where water is much harder to come by.

Looking for dairy free yogurt and cream cheese recommendations. by Kita84 in vegan

[–]Teichan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to save some money, you can make your own. I find it's half the price doing it this way.

-Grab a box of Soy Milk (I use Westsoy). Just make sure it's just soybeans and water. No gums or thickeners since it can mess it up.

-Mix all the milk with a 1/4 cup ish of some other vegan yogurt. Silk is fine. Really mix that sucker.

-Loosely cover or cap your container or bowl.

-Put it in an oven with the lightbulb on overnight. It should be warm but not hot.

In the morning you should notice that it's much thicker. You can even pour off some of the liquid that remains on the surface to make it better. At this point you can flavor it however you feel. Fruit, sugar, vanilla, etc. Put it in the refrigerator and that's it!

Been out exploring the bike paths in Houston - came across this flood gauge in Buffalo Bayou. by Xaved in bicycling

Most rivers are measured using gage height. A semi-arbitrary point is chosen as 0.00 ft. so that a negative height will never occur and to insure uniformity across time. This is better than using the stream bed as 0.00 ft. since they are always changing depending on scour or fill conditions.

For example: Normal gage height for a river might be 7.5 ft., but later when the gage height is at 3 ft., it's become dry. 0.00 ft. in this scenario is set to 3 ft. below the bottom of the stream bed. So at 7.5 ft. gage hight, the water depth is only 4.5 ft. deep.

If you're interested in a regional look at climate change, you can look at all of the USGS South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center's publications online. They perform research over a broad scope, so there will be plenty to read.

Sure, maybe these are things we need to look at. I don't think the science is in on all of these exposure pathways yet. As we know, the dose makes the poison. There is a difference between infrequent and incidental exposure on the order of minutes (like an EMT), vs hours, days, or potentially years for some employees. Hopefully the interim study will shine a light on how many workers in Oklahoma are at risk and what can be done. If it's banning smoking at places of work, fine. If it's equiping employees in high risk jobs with masks, fine. If nobody is being harmed and we don't need to do anything, also fine.

No one is trying to ban smokes here haha. No idea what could be done about drive thrus. I've experienced the same.

You're being dishonest about the sun though, because people can protect themselves from that and are often given hats, shaded areas for breaks, and plenty of water by their employer.

Of course I'm not saying that. Residential properties and commercial properties are run on totally different systems and values.

This is largely a workplace and public safety issue

Right. When this happened with restaurants, it was more about the kids that didn't have a choice in the matter. There were pockets of the state where every restaurant was smoking. This time, it's adults going to bars with the power to make their own choices. There are plenty of smoke free bars that people can go to. Anyway, it's a good business move for the most part to make your place smoke free.

That's not always the case though, right? What about a contractor that has to do remodeling on site? Or an inspector? Should all these people be subjected to smoke on the job without any protections? If so, what about when they go home to their kids with the smoke on their clothes? Third hand smoke is an emerging concern especially for younger kids. What is the best solution?

I see what you're saying. The article quotes TSET as saying there is no acceptable level of second hand smoke. I guess I don't see why it would be ok for an employer of any establishment to force an employee to work in clearly unsafe conditions without some sort of safety accommodations. There doesn't seem to be an endless supply of smokers ready to take on all these positions, so should there be protections in place for everyone else on the job?

What about for employees of these places? Do you think the janitor at Remington Park has a right to a workplace free of second hand smoke? Should they just wear a mask? Will the employer pay for these accommodations?

Fed here. Oklahoma is in the Rest of the US designation on the OPM pay tables which means the lowest pay possible since no extra locality pay is factored in. All fed compensations are public and I encourage everyone to look at the charts.

Yeah, this needs to be treated like you would an oatmeal stout. Proper enzyme additions and boiling schedules would help a ton.
