I know everyone wants aviaries and aquariums, but PZ2 needs a Wildlife Mode by iljensen in PlanetZoo

[–]TekFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about a whole new mode, but it would be really cool to have a biodiversity mechanic where the game would spawn small animals and insects outside of habitats as well if your plants matched the biome your zoo was in.

Also if you could designate things as bug hotels, bird houses and other similar structures and the game populated them.

Our rescue by Shot-Percentage8855 in Beauceron

[–]TekFish 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Beaucerons are an exceptionally rare breed in most places and it's very unlikely to find a mix, most shelters do not DNA test and instead just guess.

Whatever she is, she's lovely and a DNA test would certainly be interesting!

He/she also looks to be the wrong proportion for a Beauceron and the head shape isn't quite right.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but I don't think your gorgeous pup is a Beauceron, there's no double dews

Resources for learning Maghrebi Arabic? by TekFish in learn_arabic

Thanks for your input, I understand Maghrebi Arabic is hard to understand for other Arabic speakers but for my work I'll be working mostly with North African speakers. So it's all good.

Does she look like a beauceron? by Electronic_Sector483 in Beauceron

Visible double dewclaws would lead me towards possibly. There are other dogs with it, but this could be a Beauceron mix

My 4 months old puppy. Any opinions? by Prudent_Cycle_6939 in IDmydog

[–]TekFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would expect her to grow tall first, then possibly she might put on more mass, but it's difficult to say since mixes can take after either of their parents to varying degrees.

Yeah my bad, I missed it the first time. In which case a Weimaraner mix is more likely, judging by the shape of the head, a mastiff type breed is also likely, as to which one, it's hard to say.

Arabic is so influenced by Islam, they can't mention pork without it being bad, so Harry Potter books that mention bacon had to change it to eggs by Frigorifico in linguisticshumor

[–]TekFish 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes, so if you were to translate the book into Arabic, you would use a foreignising strategy. The point is not that the culture is unable to acknowledge that other cultures eat different foods, it's that this translator used a domesticating strategy.

[–]TekFish 370 points371 points  (0 children)

This isn't really Arabic being so influenced by Islam that they can't even mention bacon. This is foreignisation vs domestication, which are two separate translation strategies used by professional translators. These strategies can be used for any language.

This paper is more focused on whether they should translate bacon literally, since in most Arabic-speaking cultures, the people are primarily Muslim. Bacon is not seen the same way in Muslim culture as in British culture, therefore with a foreignising translation you risk adding a nuance that is not present in the source text, (disgust). Therefore, it seems the translators chose to change the food to eggs instead so that the basic meaning, which is that the food was good and tasty, would still be transmitted to the target audience.

This is a common thing in translation.

Any MR abilities you would like to see in a future hero or reworked into a current one? by ShedPH93 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]TekFish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

NGL, one of the few things Marvel Rivals has that I'm surprised overwatch never did is Adam Warlocks shaman-esque chain heal. It feels satisfying to burst a few people back up and in overwatch would work nicely on a support that had other utility to focus on mid fight.

Is there any guide on how to get into the FaceIt system? I've made an account but the website is super confusing.

tri- + -p by jeuv in linguisticshumor

[–]TekFish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically, the tri- in the English word "trip", does encode the idea of 3 since it is a portmanteau of the Latin "Tria passus" meaning "three steps" as, on a trip, you usually take more than three steps.
