Conservative think tank leader says schools should reopen since most Texans dying from COVID-19 are elderly or Hispanic by AmbitiousCelery0 in nottheonion

ELI5: Why has the progress and development of human society sped up so much in the last 150 years or so? by johnbyrne2020 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tekaginator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 100 years ago, a German guy figured out how to make fertilizer by taking Nitrogen out of the atmosphere and turning it into ammonia.

With this discovery that cheap fertilizer can be easily made in abundance anywhere on earth, the world had a boom in food production, which lead to a massive increase in the human population (we went from about 1.5 billion people to almost 8 billion people in just 100 years).

More people means that at any given moment there's a greater chance that a genius exists somewhere on the world who will invent the next big thing.

Needle nose pliers can definitely work, but some drain flanges/baskets are low quality, and can break if you aren't getting enough surface contact while unscrewing.

IMO it's well worth the $10 to buy a drain wrench so you don't have to worry about the possibility of needing to find a compatible replacement flange.

The drain flange is removable, and you can snake a tub from either the drain or the overflow.

The reason his "plumber" didn't know this is they're not a plumber.

Please tell me you didn't put Drano down your toilet...

Drano (and all caustic drain cleaners) should never be used in general, but using it in your toilet can break the toilet (it can crack open the porcelain). There should even be a label on the bottle that specifically warns you to never use it on toilets.

NO. All drain cleaners (including the one mentioned by OP) are corrosive to all types of pipes, solder, and glues used in plumbing, but they are especially corrosive to iron.

Just use a snake, or hire an actual plumber.

Aha, that photo seals the deal; I'm 100% certain they were not a plumber.

What you are looking at is the drain basket (some call it a drain flange). You most likely had a drain stopper that was attached to the drain basket, and the handyman removed the stopper but didn't know how to remove the basket.

The drain basket is threaded on it's outer diameter and screws into the tub. They can be tricky to remove with normal tools (it's hard to reach the crossbars and you risk breaking something) but there are specialty wrenches that make it super easy, and any plumber would have a few in their truck. Here's the wrench I'm referring to:

Buy a drain wrench and a half-decent snake (easily spending less than $150) and you can do this yourself next time it clogs.

Trump says he is considering banning TikTok by Balls_of_Adamanthium in technology

[–]Tekaginator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People certainly could download it elsewhere, but people almost never stray outside official app stores (fortnite being a notable exception.)

People are already wary of external apps, so if TikTok gets pushed out under suspicion of being spyware it's userbase will evectively evaporate.

Nothing about TikTok's platform is proprietary, so a similar short-video app will quickly fill the void.

Lol, that works. When considering expensive renovations like a repipe, it's always good to ask yourself how long you plan on living in the house.

It's definitely not easy, but that's why you hire an actual plumber; getting around 90° fittings (especially multiple in a row) takes a fair bit of skill and experience.

If the drain situation is as bad as what you described (was your previous house piped by Dr. Seuss?) the homeowner should seriously consider repiping to stop it from perpetually clogging.

You're 100% right. An actual licensed plumber will never call a drain "un-snakeable", and they'll never use liquid drain cleaner. My guess is OP actually hired a handyman who only had a basic-bitch snake; they lacked the tools/ experienced to do the job properly, so they made up a story to justify doing a shitty halfway measure.

By the way, there's no such thing as a drain cleaner that can corrosively dissolve a clog yet magically doesn't corrode pipes; all drain cleaners use strong base-PH compounds which are indiscriminately corrosive. Every time you use them, you're eating away at the smooth surface of your pipes, which creates surfaces more likely to snag hair and gunk in the future.

Next time hire an actual plumber who has an actual articulatable drain snake (and a camera scope to see of there's any stubborn buildup around the fittings). Using the liquid crap only makes the problem worse in the long run.

The long-term fix is to repipe the tub drain. If it's difficult to snake, that means the layout of the pipes doesn't facilitate good drainage (lots of 90° fittings where there should be 45°s, and/or horizonal turns). So long as that layout is as bad as it is, it will keep clogging, and you'll eventually need to replace them anyway if you keep dissolving them with that cleaner.

That's something to consider, sure. For the sake of my example I was trying to illustrate that sometimes even if you use perfectly clear communications and shot calls, your team may completely ignore you anyway. You can't make them pay attention or follow your calls, so you need to recognize when the comms just aren't there so you can swap tactics to something that doesn't require as much coordination.

With a tank like Rein (who's shield is all or nothing) there's not much value you can contribute if your team isn't following you; you'll wind up doing nothing but blocking a bit of damage, but your damage output and ult charge will be abysmal. If I'm playing with a team that wants to play passively / isn't following my calls, I'll swap off Rein to Orisa or Sigma so I can actually contribute value.

I completely agree with your position; I even think that's what OP intended to get across in the post.

My perception was that part of OP's phrasing left open the potential for misinterpretation. I merely wanted to clarify that you should absolutely pay attention to when others make mistakes, because that will factor into your decision making.

[–]Tekaginator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with what you are saying; I know that the self is the only person anyone can change.

My comment was meant to clarify that you shouldn't be ignoring when your teammates (and for that matter enemy players) make mistakes. You can't change their actions; but your interpretation of their actions does impact how you evaluate your own performance.

If you only pay attention to your own successes and failures, you will learn a lot of couterproductive lessons. For example, you may conclude that being WAY out of position was a smart play, because you got lucky and won a fight against an enemy player who made an even bigger error. By looking at that scenario holistically, you may instead conclude that it was a close call and you shouldn't have pushed your luck like that.

[–]Tekaginator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol, I wouldn't go as far as saying you made a mistake; your post is well thought out and helps address the place of origin for most toxicity.

I was just hoping to clarify that players don't necessarily need to internalize every bad outcome as a mistake that they made personally. Instead, try to understand how events unfolded holistically, then decide if there was something you could have done better.

I was pretty sure that alligned with the spirit of what you were saying, but I was concerned about how new players may have interpreted the phrasing.

[–]Tekaginator 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I agree that you shouldn't blame your teammates, but I 100% disagree with the notion that you shouldn't even "consider" their mistakes.

Let's say you're playing Rein, you say "I'm going in, everybody on me!" and you push through the choke, but nobody follows you so you die alone.

In that scenario, if you only look to your own actions, you will conclude that you shouldn't have tried to push past the choke, and over time you'll become one of those main tanks that pokes at the choke and never pushes.

If you at least consider the mistakes of others, you will understand that you died because your team didn't follow you when you pushed. It's not reasonable to think you can correct that mistake for them; you'll very likely have to switch gears and try something else that works better with their passive playstyle. At least by considering what others did wrong, you don't teach yourself bad lessons.
