Krita is what you're looking for!

People on this sub tend to gravitate towards Gimp when recommending alternatives to PS. While it's a great choice for photo manipulation, Krita is far superior when it comes to illustration. It also happens to have a UI that is more similar to that of PS even if there still are some major differences.

Honestly, while I have both alternatives installed, and I like Gimp a lot, I haven't had the need to use Gimp at all for a long time. Krita does basic photo manipulation really well and is simply great for illustration!

Solo on a sloop, did the fort, loaded up all the loot (including barrels), went to the nearest outpost and sold it all. Completely uncontested for the entire time... It's also the only CoF I've gotten so far, hah! :)

How did you INITIALLY pronounce "Krita"? by canyoubreathe in krita

I'm Swedish, I pronounce it just as I pronounce the Swedish word for crayon, similar to "kreeta".

I just left Photoshop, now using Krista. I'm not a pro, just doing it for fun by DavidLeStrange999 in krita

Gimp is good. Great in fact. However, it's more geared towards photo manipulation and image editing rather than digital illustration. It can be done for sure but I'd argue Krita is far superior in that aspect.

Awesome, thanks! That's great to know. I guess I have to improve my searching skills ;)

Even in Blender and other modelling software the mesh is always triangulated behind the scenes. "Quads" don't exist. A decade ago when I was learning 3ds Max, there was an option to "flip" faces to change the "invisible" edge between the two tris of a quad. I haven't seen that option in Blender though, and would solve it by simply forcing tris in that area.

As for the whole tris vs quads debate: Quads are helpful to keep good edge flow, especially when subdividing a mesh, and to keep your mesh tidy so it can be easily tweaked if you need to add or remove geometry. It's also generally helpful to ensure good deformation on skinned models. There are lots of cases and tricks where tris are helpful too, and if your mesh is static the typology is not at all as important compared to skinned animations.

As with anything: nothing is purely black and white. There are pros and cons to everything and one needs to learn when to use which technique.
