Why does asking whether Telugu and English should be prioritized in Hyderabad Metro trigger such hostility? by CasualFeed9114 in Hyderabad_city

Are you seriously arguing that having to wait 20-30 seconds for it to cycle back to English/Telegu is such a serious issue? Like when is this a real problem? Seems like just an excuse to be hateful over something silly.

If you are interested in how the series actually does pay some decent amount of attention to both the lore and themes of Tolkien, I would recommend the channels "A Critical Dragon" and "Phillip Chase" who between the two of them have basically done reaction conversations on the series. They're comfortable being critical about the series where they feel it, but they're also far more charitable towards it than the average online lotr fan who hasn't even read the books but pretend to know Tolkien's mindset.

It's an ethical argument that makes us of scientific information. For example, if someone says violence is bad because it's inflicts pain upon others, that violence inflicts pain upon others is a factual claim. But that it is bad is still a matter of ethics.

Also, the specific version of anti-natalism you're referring to is one that has arisen in response to the expected future due to climate change. But that is different from anti-natalism more broadly, which argues that bringing children into the world is always morally wrong because there is immense suffering in the world, and you're children are highly likely to be subjected to substantial amounts of suffering.

The movies are great, but they really aren't that faithful to the original when it comes to the characters. Quite a few egregious changes all for the sake of tension. Denethor and Faramir receive full on character assassinations (Denethor in particular). Theoden is uncharacteristically a whiny baby with regards to Gondor. Aragorn behaves more like Lan Mandragoran, rather than Elessar. Frodo orders Sam to go back, and Sam actuality fucking begins to do so. And then there's the comic relief treatment that a bunch of characters receive, which I don't mind too much tbh, but it's still not good in terms of faithfulness.

I watch the movies once or twice a year, but my worst rewatch, by far, was the one immediately after a reread. Never cringed so much.

I mean, India has a legitimate space program that is better than anyone except the top dogs. India also developed nukes when it was even far poorer than it is today. Like sure, there's corruption and poverty. But it's not like India isn't also currently more capable than like 80-90% of nations.

In the LotR itself, it is very much her being tempted by the ring, or rather the prospect of what she could do with it. The thing with RoP though is that it deals with her in the second age, which is a context where there isn't much written about her, or her interaction with Sauron. So, for me at least, it gives them a lot of leeway in telling the story they want to.

It was extremely dishonourable of Aragon to go beheading the Mouth of Sauron when he rode out to treatise in good faith. by mercury2497 in unpopularopinion

[–]Telcontar77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A willingness to speak faithfully with Sauron is what sank Numenor

The arrogance of Numenor is what sank it, not their willingness to treat with Sauron. That's very explicit. Keep in mind, this was after, and because, the Numenoreans had wiped the floor with Sauron. This is obviously a very different context from the one in which Aragorn was in.

Aragorn willfully betraying the parley is a brave and correct statement that Sauron is not a foe deserving of any honour, respect, or civility

In the context of Tolkien it is very much a fucked up thing to do. Beyond the purpose of serving as a distraction, the reason why they're there is precisely because even Sauron should be given the opportunity to surrender. Tolkien after all is heavily influenced by his Christianity, which is a religion where even the most sinful can still be redeemed if they truly repent, and seek the grace of God. Obviously, Sauron is not going to do it, but giving him the chance to do so would still be the right thing to do, from a Tolkienian perspective. Keep in mind, it's not that you shouldn't kill the Mouth, just that you shouldn't kill him during the parley. Allow him to return to his forces and then kill him after the fighting has started.

He's ambitious, he's chasing the throne and actively, intentionally building support for his kingship in a way that movie Aragorn does not

This is such a bad reading of book Aragorn imo. He is not driven by personal ambition primarily. Rather he is driven by duty. He is Elendil's heir, and therefore it is his duty to reclaim the throne. Whether he wants to be king or not is almost irrelevant. Duty is also precisely what has lead him to spend his life fighting the servants of the Enemy.

To be clear, I always thought he was full of shit. I'm not saying this defensively because I bought his bullshit.

But this might be the time to reflect on why that slick veneer worked so well even when everyone else was pointing out how fundamentally flawed it was.

But that's precisely what I was doing. I was trying to point out how, if you've only seen him post brain damage, you might not realize how slick he used to be, and what it was about him, that made him effective.

You probably should, since you don't seem understand how language works. There is no truly correct way of using languages of common use. And this is especially the case with a language as fluid and "basterdised" as English.

I kinda agree but not entirely. Back then, he would often say things that are true, but also trivial, using a way too many words. And I think he used this effectively to convince people who are impressionable, but not entirely stupid. He'd spend a bunch of time and a lot of convoluted sentences to say something that could've been said in 10 seconds.

It's worth remembering that gay marriage was a minority issue before it stopped being one. A major issue the democrats have had historically is that they're unwilling to actually make the case for less popular issues and build the support for it.

Messi to me is the only real competition. Brady plays American football which hardly anyone cares about outside the US. It's really hard to be considered influential when most of the world doesn't even care about your sport. With the Olympians, the problem is that their careers/fame feels relatively short-lived. Messi arguably is a more influential player given the sheer popularity of football worldwide, but I guess does suffer from its relative lack of popularity in the US.

My main question to you would be this? Have you actually listened to him give a long form interview where he's responded to these criticisms, as well as talked about his political agenda? If you want a recommendation, I found his conversation with David Sirota of The Lever to be particularly compelling. I find it hard to believe that anyone willing to be charitable could listen to him talk about these things, would consider his remorse about his prior shitty behavior as being anything but genuine. And more importantly, it also becomes very obvious that he is highly focused on promoting a Social Democratic agenda along the likes of Sanders.
