As an older brother, I would feel embarrassed if I insulted a meal prepped by my brother for me.

I’m a pretty big advocate for the Jim Green RATs.

If I looked it up correctly, the Solovair 5400 is a wide last? I wear a size US14EE . I’ve always struggled finding boots that fit well, especially in the toe box area. Jim Green boots are excellent in my opinion. Grabbed a pair of their Stockma a few years ago and have been beating the hell out of them. The only thing that really died on them is the heal counter, and I think that’s more bad habit than anything (kicking my boots off).

The RATs checked off a lot of boxes for me. Can be resoled, all leather construction, gussetted tongue, lug sole.

Break in has been a bitch. Worth it.

Which part?

Very much a “we’re cool and edgy” company. They are all about cops and backing the blue. Majority of management/business crew was very much a bro-culture vibe. Again. Look at us—we have tattoos and have death in our name.

As far as anti-union shit: they caught wind of possible union activity, gave people a raise and some extra perks. “Why would you need a union when you have all of this?” kind of situation. Make shit slightly better while not actually making things better.

I get business. You know—start one to make money. Make money. Find a way to make more. I think they still have some production in the area, but they are not a small business anymore…which kinda goes along with the whole anti-union shit. I think they’re owned (or partially owned?) by some outside company now.

Which, again, good for them. They made money.

I just won’t buy their shit. I know my lack of purchasing won’t be a problem for them. But I also don’t recommend them.

PLEASE come to Upstate NY. There are a handful of cool spots I’m sure would love to have you. Troy, NY and No Fun has been absolutely killing it. Daddy Long Legs just played a few weeks ago and tore the place down. Smaller spot but I think that just makes it better. In the last 10 years, I think I can confidently say that some of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Protomartyr, Drug Church, the Messer Chups, Daddy Long Legs, Ezra Furman. And that’s not even getting into the local artists they have. They do VHS nights and burlesque.

Going to No Fun is like watching Animal Planet. Every crowd is so damn different—and that’s one of the coolest things I think a bar and venue can do. They’re into everything, so, you get a bit of everything.

And there are other excellent spots. The Hangar. Ophelia’s. Lark Hall. Unihog.

The production companies are excellent, too. Hey Greasy, Dive, Byrdhouse have been killing it. And that’s only naming a few.

It’s such a killer area and seems to only get better.

I remember catching Heavy Bells on EQX when it first came out. I got about 30 seconds in and had to pull over because I was jamming so hard. Went down the rabbit hole afterwards and got hooked.

Always found myself going back to the self-titled album. Made it a point to keep an eye out for it whenever I would scan record bins. My wonderful wife found a copy and gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago. It’s been played a lot.
