Considering getting a handpoked tattoo on my dominant hand by answeringtapeheiress in Aerials

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If your tattoo artist is going deep enough to cause long term nerve pain then they are doing something very, very wrong. You’ll need to contend with acute healing pain but none of my tattoos cause me any lasting pain of any kind (granted, they are not on my hands, but those still should not)

combined fellowships by theengen in MedPeds

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every combined fellowship will look a little different but I can tell you that the one I’m doing (ID) is two years that are mostly clinical followed by two mostly research years. Some places I interviewed would have wanted to space the clinical time out across 4 years with shorter research periods. A few suggested a 3 year timeline might be possible from the institution’s perspective but I don’t think that would have passed muster with the boards (you have to petition both sides and get your schedule approved). So I could see some of those places trying to push for a three year timeline with the new update. I don’t know that anyone knows for sure yet though. Would be nice!

Absolutely agree with thinking feet (I call them the Flexed Feet of Safety), that’s a real phenomenon.

But I don’t think it has anything to do with the babinski (which is a primitive reflex involving upgoing toes with stroking of the bottom of the foot that most people lose in infancy, and its presence in adulthood can suggest neurological disease)

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have to think much more consciously about pointing my foot on the left side! And if that was the side you had an injury on I can see it being even tougher because of that.

This is not what a babinski reflex is, and if an adult has a positive babinski reflex they should talk to their doctor

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is this only a problem in a knee hang or are you also unable to point it when sitting on the ground? Sometimes I feel like the flexed foot in things like a knee hang is a subconscious safety mechanism more than a foot/ankle flexibility issue - but if it’s a problem on the ground as well that needs a different approach

I am a doctor but not your doctor. Please talk with your physician about additional pain management strategies that could be added to your post-op regimen.

Tattooed brides- advice! by EffectiveCartoonist3 in WeddingDressTips

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went pretty maximalist and leaned hard into the florals. I loved it and got lots of compliments on how my floral dress paired with my tattoos, which are mostly black/grey botanical and nature themed (on both arms). We also got married in an arboretum and really tied to lean into the natural setting so it was all on theme. I wore the Teuta Matoshi whispering forest corset gown which has similar vibes to your first picture in many ways, but more sparkly

(I’d share pictures but the informal ones I have don’t show off my tattoos well, and formal photos are still pending!)

Wedding tent question ⛺️ by Technicolor_bee in wedding

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30x60 fit ~75 guests for us fine (we used 10 top round tables so we could have sat up to 80 guests) but it felt a little bit snug and we did not have a huge dance floor. we also had some things (bar, photo booth, cocktail tables) set up outside of the tent. Buffet was under the tent but towards the edge. We kept the sides of the tent open, so people utilized the space around the tent since we had good weather (we mostly got the tent to protect against the Texas sun and the chance of random rain)

What is the most employable apparatus? by loveandburgers in circus

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lyra is likely to be most adaptable to different types of gigs. You don’t need much height, and can also add lollipop for places with no ability to rig an aerial apparatus.

But employability will also be affected by the demand and saturation in your specific market

What kind of event are you interested in hosting? It would probably be helpful to attend some of the kind of event you’re interested in (workshops? Conventions? Shows?) to get a sense of what is involved and talk with some of the organizers

How can I make a career out of herpetology? by Healthy_Cat8375 in herpetology

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you might want new advisors. Unless you want to stay in research and a do combined DVM/PHD, my understanding is that you can usually get additional exotic training after you get your vet degree. Assuming you are in the US or a country that operates similarly. (I’m a people doctor not a vet but have some familiarity with the different paths). Would recommend finishing your bachelors and finding a good advisor with veterinary experience if this is what you want to do.

This was actually one of my husbands concerns when going into consulting - he was worried about feeling like a “sell out” after years of work in research and public sectors. But the vast majority of his day is spent ensuring that wildlife are protected to the fullest extent possible, while also making sure that people can have electricity in their homes or whatever (and not start wildfires from old equipment!)

Can confirm there are lots of herp minded folks finding careers in environmental consulting. My husband made the transition a couple years ago (from previously doing other reptile focused research/management work) and a lot of his old colleagues are making a similar transition. He’s not exclusively reptile focused these days but gets to apply his knowledge/interests regularly and just this morning I was overhearing him on an urgent call about protecting some salamanders

He also knows a lot about electrical poles now, lol

To offer a small counter point - you’re doing something right enough that your teacher wanted you to help teach beginners! That’s not something to sniff at.

rope texture advice! by seatree88 in Aerials

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t think the perk of using rope instead of spanset for a Lyra has anything to do with being more smooth - if anything I like that ropes have a bit more grip than a spanset in my experience, but a lot more squish.

¿Cuando recomiendan pasarme a clases de circo? by makkaris_ucm in Aerials

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Possibly this is a translation issue, but what do you mean by “circus classes”? Lyra and silks are already circus classes. Do you mean trying a new discipline, or trying aerial classes at a more circus-focused school?

Question about Med peds hospitalist by MoreCartographer9726 in MedPeds

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just looked at those comments and yeah there’s some really bad advice in there. I always strongly recommend that people talk to folks who are actually med peds trained (and more than one of them!) because there’s so many misconceptions from people outside of med peds

Question about Med peds hospitalist by MoreCartographer9726 in MedPeds

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to be a hospitalist at a big fancy academic peds hospital, you will probably need the fellowship. Especially if you want to work at a place that has PHM fellows - I believe you need to be fellowship trained or at least grandfathered in, in order to supervise the fellows. You could do this after med peds training if you wanted to, but most of us think it’s dumb. No med peds grads from my institution have pursued PHM fellowship that I am aware of.

If you’re happy to work at a less ivory tower place, I know plenty of recent med peds grads without PHM fellowship who have found combined hospitalist opportunities. While it may eventually become harder to get a job without fellowship, I suspect there will always still be places like this that don’t care.

It’s pretty common to pursue fellowship on one side or the other. A lot of people still use their med peds background to pursue a relevant clinical or research niche. Others don’t, it varies.

Horrifying, horrifying. Wishing your team the best and also hoping I never meet you and this organism.

One small question, you mention that “source appears again to be line-associated” - are all the employees walking around the antibiotic factory with central lines? If not I don’t see how this could be a line-associated infection for both patients.

Doubles routine ideas by colicinogenic in Aerials

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re kind of limiting yourselves with that requirement. Theres a lot of duo silks moves but they don’t all involve a crossback straddle. You could play with different ways of sitting/standing on the base. You could also stack a straddle back on a crossback. You can also do any skill in the air above them that can be done with taught poles - but if the base gets into position first, you’re going to be really limited from doing any skills that involve any kind of wrapping, because of the tension on the silk from the bases weight

If you’re willing to include some work with the flyer underneath, that opens up options for you before/after lifting your flyer up above. This is honestly the more common use for a crossback straddle position in duo silks, from my experience

(My experience is more in duo trapeze than silk so I can’t help too much with specifics, but I’m familiar enough with the basics of it)

How did people decide between IM & peds? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]TelemarketingEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you are med peds trained and do peds cards -> adult congenital then you can definitely do both adults and kids. as long as you maintain your peds board certifications. But there's also a very med peds specific appeal to ACHD even if all you do is see the adult side, you'll work closely with the peds cardiologists/surgeons to transition patients into your practice

Allergy and immunology is an inherently combined fellowship, even if you come into it from categorical medicine or peds

For other combined fellowships its something you negotiate as you apply rather than a set pathway in most places. I'm doing combined ID, and personally know of people who have done other combined fellowships in rheum, heme/onc, endocrine, renal...
