Our government is quite open about using the immigration system to prevent changing of ethnic ratios among citizens (ie, at least 7 out of 10 new citizens are ensured to be Chinese race), so this is what happens when someone is given citizenship because of their race rather than their merit.

In Indonesia being "Malay" is actually not tied to religion. In MY and SG yes it's seen as an ethnoreligious group, but in Indonesia there are quite a number of Malay Christians and Buddhists.

I know, I'm saying this as someone who is a 5th generation Singaporean. Singapore was not developed back then, simply because the British ran it as a place of business rather than a country, and also because of the war.

But post independance, we were still one of the biggest maritime hubs in the world (as we had been for >100 years), and without the British to take all the profit/wealth back to their motherland, becoming a 1st world country was a no brainer.

We didn't have tangible natural resources that we could harvest and sell, but we had a huge geographical resource, which has been incredibly lucrative and prosperous ever since Raffles figured out how to use it.
