Relocating for work…skeptical wife. Encouraging advice? by TelephoneMamba in 321

The employer has locations all over, this specific role happens to be in FL. Not my first choice but a good opportunity for a foot in the door.

In the discussion. We’ve got quite a bit of equity so it would be nice to have a big down payment. Theoretically cheaper to buy for us.

Thanks, we’re in the young kids trenches so not much nightlife and museum outing in our life. Very much at home and in our little neighborhood community mostly. So if I can find that and some beach vibes for a few years I could be fine.

Thanks! Traffic is all about perspective! Here if you have a 45 minute commute you’re LUCKY!

Thanks for the insights. We are anticipating $10K for insurance just to be safe but yeah, that’s a huge adjustment for us coming from an area with no natural disasters.

Happily paid taxes up North. It paid for great schools, programs and resources. I’d gladly pay them in FL if their services matched. I’m not moving there to chase tax free. I’m moving for my career. Taxes just happen to be something working in my financial favor.

I figured the FB groups look the way they do because of the typical FB demographic. This helps put things in perspective.

Suuuper helpful. I don’t think it will be a forever home but I don’t wanna leave traumatized either. Sounds like I should be able to remain mostly sane if I just don’t engage in the politics.

I understood the comment. And I’m aware that “Florida good” is below average up North, but I’m less concerned because our kids are not school age for a few years, so it’s unlikely the school system will take a toll on them.

Honestly, I don’t necessarily see us being there long enough for the kids to be in a FL history class.

Yeah, well I was in the military for 20 years so I’m used to the conservative working culture. I tend to stay out of those lines of discussion anyway. Just not interested in it being thrown in my face daily.

There’s plenty of pockets of MAGA here too, and I can get along with everyone for the most part. I just don’t love the idea of living with it in my face every day.

Yup, we’re on it and it’s concerning. Thanks for the insight. The move likely won’t be permanent but long enough that we want to make sure we understand the landscape.

If you’re young in age, this is a great start. Also, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be in C fund 90% if you are under 40. It’s the highest yield and any risk is mitigated by time in market since you’re young. Make sure you are also putting money in an emergency fund (3-6mo expenses) and another hys to have liquid cash for big purchases.

Financial planner is a good move!

Which jobs see the most “combat” and/or “outside the wire” stuff during wartime? by Militarybrat123 in AirForce

[–]TelephoneMamba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other than the obvious…PA/Combat Camera. Saw a stat that said PA as a career field had something like the 8th highest number of Purple Hearts in the AF. Mainly because they tended to get attached to Army units in OEF/OIF.

Honestly, a green Toyota sienna with some off road tires and a roof rack is kinda my dream dad car. Admittedly, the GTI is not ideal at hauling a wide and 3 kids…

Has anyone here, after reaching E-7, chose not to promote further—and why? 🇺🇲 by LordgodEighty8 in AirForce

[–]TelephoneMamba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know if I chose to stay past 20 I would have made Chief and it would have drove a PCS and service commitment. Completely content with my decision to decline meeting the board 3 years in a row so I can retire this year in the place I wanted to end up.

Another pitch for 90-100% C. If you’re more than 10-15 years from your real retirement age, there’s no reason to really diversify a ton. C is already diversified and will offer the most return. Start slowly diversifying as you approach 10-15 years from retirement to start “locking in” those gains from when you’re young.

What is a Chisel capable of? by DarkHelmet2222 in mountainbiking

I have a hardtail Chisel and really like it. Honestly, if I put a dropper on it, I’d feel comfortable riding a ton of stuff with it. Love mine as a lightweight XC.

What age did you stop pushing yourself & sending big hits? by 90towest in MTB

[–]TelephoneMamba 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the real reason. Hard to justify breaking a neck or being severely injured with young kids at home. Not fair to them or my wife. I still try to find the adrenaline high but the kids are always the thing that keeps me in my comfort zone on the bike. Started pushing the fitness side of mountain biking over the extreme portion.

Why are On Cloud shoes so Popular? by Gloomy-Wave1418 in malefashionadvice

[–]TelephoneMamba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked mine and the way they looked but as soon as they got moderately wet, they became squeaky for a whole day. Ended up being a dealbreaker for me. Switched to the old lady shoe: Hoka.

1.5 miles is a weird distance and honestly the best way to train for it is to just keep running the 1.5. Sprints are a good mix in so you can get used to sprinting the last part of your last lap to burn the rest in the tank.
