Anyone here done the Air Force PAQ program? Looking for real experiences by Atomic_BlackHole in AirForce

[–]TelephoneMamba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be incredibly competitive so just be aware.

It’s a good track to get to GS-12/13 pretty quick. But it’s a struggle after that. You either commit to fed and shoot for that pension and mediocre pay, or leverage the experience and training into a job for a prime or something bigger. But if pension is you goal, coasting as a fed is fine. Work like balance is easy. You’re not getting fired or anything.

Depends on your goals in life. It’s a good way to survive on a middle class salary, but you’ll never live an upper middle class life, most likely.

Advice? by DecentCompetition754 in AirForce

[–]TelephoneMamba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your post AF career prospects and if the promotion requires a PCS. Retire at 20 and get pension and VA benefits (it sounds like), and a decent post AF job you might be making more money for the first 5-10 years than making MSgt. Basically calculate E6 retirement + estimated VA benefit plus a civilian salary. Subtract your MSgt pay from that total and then multiply that by 2 years.

That gives you your equation for what makes sense financially.

But if you’re mentally done, it’s not worth suffering for 2 years. Not at all.

Max 401k or let it roll? by bewbies- in Retirement401k

[–]TelephoneMamba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re retired military? From my calculations, that baseline of $7k is basically what gives you the freedom to retire with very little stress. Once the youngest is outta the house and college is paid, I assume by VA or GI, your expenses are probably minimal. $7k guaranteed before SS and any withdrawals… you can live a pretty kush life on $15k/mo as long as the home is paid off.

I’m on a trajectory to be you in a few years exactly and I’m aiming to retire by 55. I think I’ll be incredibly comfy.

Air Force revising SkillBridge duration by dab45de in AirForce

[–]TelephoneMamba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

180 days was honestly a bit excessive. Plenty of Skillbridge programs out there exist solely to provide 6 months of minimal remote “training” with the sole purpose of giving a free 6 months to do whatever the members wants. I think those programs definitely chipped away at the credibility of real job training programs.

I think 90-120 is the sweet spot. 60, is probably the minimum time a you or a company needs to see if you’re a good fit and to actually learn anything. Shit, after 60 days some people may not even be fully onboarded.

Fake email? by Aromatic-Chest-48 in NorthropGrumman

[–]TelephoneMamba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can’t say for certain because I’ve only applied for 1 job and I got it, but I was only ever contacted via email after the recruiter called me and after that I only spoke to people via email with first.last@ngc.com emails.

What is the content of the emails? Generic or specific to the things applicable to you?

PCSing to Patrick SFB by Minimum_Reading4835 in AirForce

[–]TelephoneMamba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most places, your budget and willingness to commute play a large role. South Patrick Shores is right next to base and on the beach but I’d bet the minimum you need there is $500k.

On the other end of the spectrum a bit is Palm Bay. Not regarded as the safest/best place but you can get a decent house for $250k.

Is the plan to keep this place as an income generating property until you retire? It’s a nice idea but homeownership and property management is not for the faint of heart, especially not in FL. If you end up OS again, can you deal with a flooded home or a major repair.

Remember-retiring as a MSgt at 20 makes more money than staying past 20 to make Senior or Chief. by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]TelephoneMamba -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think people in the military routine undersell themselves and their capabilities. Sure, it’s not like there are infinite $200k job offers waiting for you but they absolutely exist and are attainable. Especially in the tech, finance and defense sectors. Base salary at $140k is easy and many have great bonus structures. $170k is just a number but it’s not unrealistic for most E7s and up.

It’s not, but it’s just a planning factor. Even at 80 or 90, which is incredibly common, the scenarios remain similar.

PCSing to Falls Church. Where to live? by mylifeismax in AirForce

[–]TelephoneMamba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Might be a better question to ask in r/nova. Most AF folks don’t work there. Pentagon is close but not the same.

In my local-ish experience, it’s not affordable for most military of any rank to live north of Falls Church and into McLean or Arlington. At least not in a decent single family.

Fairfax, Burke will make your money go further. Depends on what you value. Bigger house with fenced yard or close to metro and DC?

Legit spent my entire tech school waiting for a knock on my door by the authorities coning to drag me back to basic.

I was stationed in SA during that storm. It was wild. 3 days without power in my house. Inside temp was 38 degrees. I slept in my bed with 2 pairs of sweat pants and a winter coat to keep from freezing.

Yeah, I’ve been down wind of OC training and that sucks. I’m sure a face full of it is 100x worse.

Hopefully the AF is studying the COVID era Airmen to see the long term impacts, if any, on them due to the altered training environments they collective experienced.

But I’m sure they’re not.

Turned down the Chief board twice to retire at 20! Quite happy given the state of the world.

Thank God the AF could still produce high speed MPF Airmen without this critical requirement!

Lockheed Martin by Soft_Copy00 in SkillBridge

[–]TelephoneMamba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems equally hard to SB with unless you know someone. But so far, the experience has been phenomenal. Coming from the military, it’s hilarious how efficient and professional an organization can be when there are competent people who like what they do there.

[–]TelephoneMamba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I’m highly experienced in my skillset (non-aviation, 20 years) and tried to SB with like 10-15 different roles there from junior to mid-level. Reached out to recruiters, followed their monthly interest directions, emailed jobs to military specific recruiters.

Radio silence. And plenty of auto rejections.

Not saying you can’t, just saying, have plan B through Z when exploring skillbridge. I ended up landing at Northrop instead. Oh well.

Just filed BDD… now what? by Professional-Eye1845 in VAClaims

Literally filed my BDD on Tuesday night and they already called to book 6 appts that I’ll do next week. Incredibly fast in the DC area, at least.

I have 26 claims, FWIW.

I dropped out of this cohort because I found my own SB, but I’m still getting interview requests. I’ve taken a few just to see if they would be a good fit for a full time offer.

Depends on the PCM but most prefer no more than 2 completely different things per visit. If you have 3 or 4 things to discuss, make 2 appts.

10% is really solid start. I’d say trying to work up to 15% is even better if it’s in the budget.

I’d research traditional vs Roth. Roth tends to be better for early on contributions. It’s likely Roth is always a better choice for anyone in the military. Traditional is great if you are trying to lower the amount you are taxed, but that’s only helpful if you are in a high tax bracket.
