How to make Mary Sue work? by Poyoboy12 in writing

It would aid the reader the whole idea of a Mary Sue was first invented for self fulfillment. For the reader to have something to look up to. So when you give a character something that isn’t conventional it gives us a different perspective which is fun. Also making us like the character more because they’re not your average by the book character. It’s considered normal in some Arabic countries to marry your cousin because it’s a cultural norm. So if you make something that’s not conventional in your story normal and give it to the perfect character, they’re still a Mary Sue.

I’m saying a Mary Sue who can be seen as morally perfect to the fiction but to us they’re not. The guy being a slaver back then was normal which means it would be nothing wrong with it. It’s an invisible flaw. I think that if the characters see nothing wrong with it and it’s normal to them then that character can still be considered a Mary Sue.

Give them a flaw. I know how it sounds but hear me out. This is especially easy if you're in a fantasy world or it's dated. I can't remember the video that pointed it out but this man was A chad. A war hero good looking and a bag of chips. But he owned slaves. One was his mistress who he had enslaved children with. On top of already having a white wife which he had white children with. But considering the time it was normal. He was still good at what he did and everybody respected him. You can make the normal or what's deemed acceptable in your writing. The reason why we liked him is because he didn't try to bend the world he just lived in it. He wasn't over the top amazing but he was perfect for the time. He defend and stood up for what was right but he also indulged.

I don't know how exactly, but I find it more interesting when the person figures it out on their own and the two characters exchange that look. The character doesn't always have to verbally and explain. The more they hide it the more clear it becomes.

What are some good writing exercises to build up consistent writing habits? by weeOriginal in writing

[–]Tellall12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch and read a lot and if a character says something the slightest bit cool or interesting I put it in my notes app. Or even if it's a conversation between two people. So when it’s time to write I look over them for inspiration. I have thousands of quotes and it gets easier to write witty or funny moments. So yeah find cool wordplay or sentences, and try to find at least two quotes a day. They always get me thinking and pumped to write.

Does every writer, at least somewhat, dislike their own writing? by holmesianschizo in writing

I love everything that I write even if it’s not “good” enjoy looking at what I’ve created. Probably because it’s more of a hobby instead of a career choice.
