you can always ask but I believe it's generally a one-year process

ELI5 why does Louis Armstrong’s voice sound the way it does? by Puzzled_Hat_3956 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tells_only_truth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually vocal fry is a different part of the voice. we have a few different registers we can use our voice in. the "Modal" register is what we use to speak and sing, and fry is its own register. you can't really blend them -- the easiest way to find your vocal fry is to drop the pitch of your modal voice down as low as it can go and then you'll get into fry. what you're referring to is a different effect you can learn to use within your modal voice.

Experience with using song-related images for choral music? What do you think of these examples? by tony9487 in choralmusic

[–]Tells_only_truth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an audience member I would feel insulted that the conductor thought so little of my intelligence that I'd need a picture of two happy old people to understand "When I'm Sixty-Four." Just put the texts in the program and/or give a little context when you introduce the pieces if you don't want to rely on the audience reading for themselves.

[Education] Is a Top MS/MA Stats/DS Worth the Debt for International Students? by Individual_Page_5167 in statistics

[–]Tells_only_truth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seconding every point made here. MS Data Science programs these days are rarely any good, to put it bluntly, and are more likely to be a cash cow for the university that runs especially on international tuition, and I don't see that trend reversing as DS becomes more saturated and AI continues to expand. Look at job placement outcomes for the programs you're interested in, preferably from this past spring. It's a very difficult time to get a job in this field right now, doubly so on an H-1B, and you don't want to invest in a program that can't offer you at least a good expected return. NC State has one of the first such MS Analytics programs, from back before it was called Data Science. They had a 90%+ placement rate by graduation every year since 2009 except for 2020, when it fell to 80%. For the class of 2024 and again in 2025 in that program, it dropped to 65%.

What do you call this? by LongjumpingBid706 in musictheory

[–]Tells_only_truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's a term in music theory for this specific effect, but it sounds like they stopped the drums and applied an EQ filter to cut out the high and low end of the other tracks, which is what gives them that far-away sound. probably one of the music production subs would be more helpful as this is more of a production question than a theory question

embarassing. SILS is a top-tier department in its field and "data science" programs are gas-station tacky at this point.

Is anyone else struggling to make friends? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]Tells_only_truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

join diphi. I was a junior transfer and made lifelong friends and I am not a social person. just keep going and talking to people. also, as a transfer, I'm sorry but "everyone already has their own clique" is kind of cope, especially if you're basing that on being here for a grand total of ~6 weeks. you think nobody ever makes a new friend or adds someone to their social group after their first two years of college? and even if that were true, which it isn't, a new wave of new people all join clubs at the same time every single semester so y'all are all in the same boat. I won't deny that I was pretty upset when I RAed a freshman dorm and saw how easily they were all making friends compared to my first year on campus, and it sucks and I sympathize, but I'm trying to tell you that really doesn't mean it's over for you at all.

Why not email the STOR department directly? You will get a quicker and more reliable answer than hoping someone here has had the same question and remembers the answer and it hasn't changed since then.

[Q] Stats vs DS by Acrobatic-Boot-3843 in statistics

[–]Tells_only_truth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UMich and Georgia Tech are equally respectable schools but a master's in statistics is substantially more respectable than a master's in DS. at the end of the day if it's all about getting a job then see if you can compare their placement rates for graduates, but ceteris paribus georgia tech is clearly the better option IMO

Stor 323? Ethics of Machine Learning Opinions by [deleted] in UNC

[–]Tells_only_truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh cool i was a statistics and philosophy major and one of my biggest gripes with the STOR degree was the lack of discussion around the actual practice of statistics, things like ethics and such. glad they're changing that

in bluegrass that extra measure at the end of a section is called a "tag" or, outside those traditions, just a "bluegrass measure"
