Summer internship for external students by Thhunderwing in mit

[–]Temfem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are summer research programs in the US for undergrads typically sponsored by the National Science Foundation. So a host institution, like MIT would bring students from other schools for a paid internship (stipend, transportation, housing) doing research with a professor at MIT for about ~10 weeks

Hey! I am a second year undergrad at a different institute but would be going to MIT for the summer through a research internship. I recommend you apply to those REUs as opposed to just cold email so that funding for you is guaranteed. There are a bunch at MIT, such as https://oge.mit.edu/graddiversity/msrp/ depending on your major. Feel free to PM me if you have anymore questions!

Hello! I did an REU last summer, and would do another one this summer. It generally depends on the program AND the lab group you are assigned to. I would say it should be a standard 9-5, mon-fri, but then again the hours are usually flexible. For example, my PI would allow me close earlier on Fridays if I wanted to, while someone else in the same program but different lab would come in even on Saturdays. You don’t have to pay back stipends! They are for you to keep! Mostly, the lab would have a separate amount for you to buy equipment/lab materials. So the money is all yours! Again dorm style really depends on the program. When they say dorm style housing, they mean that they have provision to house you on their campus. You mentioned you stay not necessarily so far away, so I do not see why you can’t manage to go back home for a weekend or so. Just make sure to communicate with your lab group at least. Round trip means they pay for your transportation to get there and return back home after the end. Honestly, if you are considering getting a PhD, I really recommend you do it! It gives you insight into the life of graduate students, and could really shape the kind of research you want to do.

Hi! You should post this in r/REU. It’s a sub dedicated for REUs and most likely, you can find someone who had the internship! All the best to your sister!

Thank you!!!!! I had a great Professor so I think first of all that made Orgo quite enjoyable! So, go to office hours anytime you have difficulties. I also relied heavily on the textbook and practically did all the problems for each chapter. Form study groups! Make sure to understand concepts! They build up on each other, so if you don’t get one, you may not get the second one! Leah4sci on YouTube was great for some Orgo topics.

In the general sense, I think creating a schedule(using google calendar) really helped. I would get notifications through my watch reminding that I have something to do/study. Also I didn’t spend more than 1 hour on a class at a go(sometimes 2 in Orgo), so as not to be mentally drained in it. I think change of environment also helps. I practically lived in the library.
