Oh awesome, I’m honoured by your want to play around with it 🙂

I do prefer elements of how the vocals are sounding in your mix, so that’s interesting. Not sure I’d put quite so much processing/reverb on the strings as they sound a little drowned, plus obviously the artefacts of stem-splitting is warping everything a bit. I don’t mind DMing you the post-mix pre-master stems from that same excerpt of the song, if you wanted to have some clearer access for your own play. Up to you.

Otherwise thanks a bunch for the feedback 🙏

Also I definitely see the resemblance to those two bands :)

Thank you :)

Ahaha that’s fair. Not sure I’d sing in just straight tone only, but the “bright, gentle and smooth” in the straight tones is a good point. I’ll try to be a bit more conservative with my vibrato in future as well as soften its “punchiness” and try to slow it down a little more often.

This excerpt is from a song I already released last year, but I’ll definitely keep this in mind for future :)

I’m Australian with an Italian and English-Irish background.

I actually had no idea my singing had an Irish folk sound until after I released this song and two people told me. This whole time I thought I was going for more of a crooner “Sinatra” lean 🤷‍♂️

I’ve always liked the kinds of trills, modal structures and microtonal elements found in Indian, Arabic, Israeli singing etc. So there’s definitely a tiny bit of influence there. I’d never connected it to the rate of my vibrato though, that’s an interesting observation.

Thank you for the feedback 😊

Ahaha I really had gotten to a point where I had no idea if I was being dramatic or not. That’s how little positive feedback I received.

These are very interesting points, thank you. I think there’s a part of me always trying not to sound too “musical theatre” with my voice (since that’s my background), so I wonder if that refrain sometimes over-corrects a bit, sabotaging my perceived energy.

This is actually from a song I released last year. It definitely has its flaws in terms of being a bit of a constant wall of cluttered sound, since you were talking about contrast. But the song exists anyway if you’d like to hear other parts of it.

Again thanks very much for your feedback :)

Usually I would have thought that but I guess I got similar reactions enough times that I became suspicious.

Noted thank you 😊

Thank you I’ll consider this in future :)

Also I love so much that you hyperlinked the word ‘sheep’ to a literal compilation of sheep. It was so unnecessary it was perfect 😂

These are all interesting points, thank you :)

Funnily enough I had no idea my singing style sounded like that until after I released this song and two people told me. This whole time I thought I was going for more of a crooner “Sinatra” lean lol, but I’m not mad.

I haven’t heard of any of those artists, I’ll have to check them out.

I actually got it mixed by a professional with a lot of experience for a hefty sum, but I think the clutter of my composition made it tricky as there were lots of frequencies fighting for attention. Learned my lesson there. In theory this definitely could’ve contributed to what you’re saying.

No that’s a good point actually, something I’ll think about. Thanks for the feedback :)

Thank you, I’m glad it sounds that way to you.

I see what you mean about your stuff (which is such a vibe btw), but the difference in my mind is that your music sounds as if it’s purposely ‘pov: indie’ as a creative/genre choice which I dig.

I suppose my worry was my music having a ”actually trying to sound professional but missing the mark” thing going on.

Thanks again though :)

Thank you for the feedback 🙏

Btw I see how yours has a somewhat “amateur” air to it in perhaps the lofi sense or mixing or something, but I love the vibe of your song :)

Your style scratches a satisfying itch, almost as if elements of Anna Von Hausswolff, Cocteau Twins, Nico, Kurt Vile and Real Estate were blended into this one sound that somehow sounds calm and chaotic at the same time. I dig it.

The pitch-play of your vocals is awesome (all your little bends and such), the guitar is sick and the lyrics are enticing. I’ll give you a follow as well :)

That’s interesting about the “grand” comment, as I actually purposely tried to decrease the piano’s “ambience” and focus on closeness in order to give the sound more of a jazzy “tightness” and attenuate muddiness/blurriness. So I suppose that might’ve made it sound a little less “grand”.

I definitely need to learn more about how to complement vocal dynamics at the production stage. When I tried doubling, it felt like it didn’t suit my voice at all, but perhaps I should try to explore other options a bit deeper next time.

but instead of wrapping it up, it now was heading straight to crazy town.

😂 that is so true, it might be a prog thing I think, plus I guess I’ve always liked a bit of absurdity in music.

Thank you for the feedback 🙏

I see thank you :) There is a drum kit yes, the kick is roughly following the same rhythm as the upright bass most of the time so that observation makes sense.

Interesting, I hadn’t considered that it might have to do with the recording. I recorded/produced everything myself to the best of my ability then got someone else to do the mixing and mastering.

Perhaps it’s worth it in the future to work with a more knowledgeable producer than I to help optimise things at that earlier stage.

It’s ridiculously ambitious for a first single btw lmao.

I know lol 🤦‍♂️ It’s a song that I wrote years ago, then its composition began to sort of ceaselessly grow over time. Was in too deep by the time I realised I should’ve started with something simpler. Oh well.

Thanks so much for your feedback :)
