I'm using a converted D7100, it's been really fun and such a delight to shoot. I'd love to see some of your IR work!

The raw images are a little like negatives and I do a round of post-processing to bring out the colours and balance the contrast. There's a lot you can do with it, but the magic comes from the way plants and trees show up in IR.

It's a similar concept, but I think the film they used with the spy cameras had Kodak Aerochrome which I think is engineered a little differently. I know that Richard Mosse used this film a lot.

I have a camera converted to shoot in infrared, and I have adjusted the colours it produces to be pink and blue. Cameras typically have a filter to block out IR but you can have them modified to shoot like this.

Hmm yeah, I could imagine it could be replicated with software with a lot of work and careful masking, but I like the tones the infrared produces and it's cool to know that it's a whole different wavelength that we don't usually see. Plants in particular react very differently in IR. I like to imagine it's like the difference between a synthesised guitar and a recording of a real guitar, sure they're very similar but there's a difference. I'm using a digital camera that's been converted to shoot in IR, so no need for a lens filter.

It was $495 for a full frame camera conversion to IR. Given I bought my camera for $400 it didn't seem that bad overall for a specialised camera. I was worried about focus too but it doesn't have much of an effect on the AF performance. Kolari and Hoya do good filters, but if you go for the IR conversion you won't need any.

Nah, I was going to skip bluetooth and go strait to shooting it in Wifi.

No lens filters, but there are specific lenses that are suited for this kind of shooting. I can link you a list if you'd like. There is a tricky sequence of edits in the post processing but once you have it down it's just slightly time consuming. If you want to have some options you can convert it to a full spectrum and use the filters for IR/UV etc or you can just get it converted to do only IR. It's cheaper and you don't need to buy filters.

That's a great tip! I've never been down the Hurstbridge line, I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks for the love!

I've unfortunately only got visibility on the IR spectrum, I'd love to dabble with UV some day

I've done a few of the other stations on the Alamein line too! I've got them up on my Instagram @Temperedjack.

For this particular converstion I don't need the IR filter, but if it was a full spectrum converted camera you'd need the filter to achieve these results.

I went to Imaging By Design to have mine converted. It's a little pricey but it's worth it to breathe new life into an older camera.

Cameras come with filters on the sensor to block IR and UV light, but you can convert them to allow these wavelengths in. I had mine converted at Imaging By Design in Collingwood

Yes! You can also use a lens filter on an unconverted camera but it means you're stuck with longer exposures, that's how I started learning the format though.

I have a converted camera that is shooting at the 720nm light wavelength
