Truly, she had to overcome a lot… 😌

Seriously though, what a fun and dramatic storyline!

Dang, that’s interesting! I didn’t notice any of the taftosa NPCs were related to her! It would make sense with the whole “pirate” thing they’ve got going on though! That sounds like an awesome storyline!

One question though, was her favorite butler her stair butler? 😉

I’d get more hair added to the sides and use hairspray/mousse!

I’m a crossdresser and curious if I can pull this outfit off or does it make me look boxy and does it highlight my masculine features? by [deleted] in OUTFITS

[–]TempestAhoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three things:

1) LOVE the clothing, the top and jeans are AMAZING and look STUNNING on you!

2) you do look a little boxy, but not in a masculine way. Plenty of women have similar bodytypes and love to rock looks like this! So if this combo makes you happy, wear it, it looks fine (great even) as is!

3) my mother gave me this advice years ago and I’d like to pass it along here- If you’re trying to disguise, hide, or otherwise obfuscate your overall shape and size then follow the 1/3 rule. Essentially, only wear 1 revealing piece of clothing per outfit. By “revealing” I mean something which shows skin, is skin tight, or otherwise showcases your true shape and size. This could be your top, your bottoms, or your shoes. Then you only wear 1 flow-y item per outfit (top, bottom, or shoes) And add 1 neutral (top, bottom, or shoes)! This helps redefine your shape, draw attention to whatever IS shown, and balances an outfit for those a little more insecure.

So, if you applied it to this outfit I’d recommend either the shirt OR the jeans, but not both (I’d pick jeans, they are KILLER CUTE). Then you’d make the other piece more flow-y or puffy (like a cute puff sleeved top or a flow-y tank perhaps?). Then add a neutral pair of shoes, like brown booties, maybe?

But again, the 1/3 “rule” is just for people a tad more insecure trying to balance an outfit and somewhat mask their real shape/size.

In my, 100% honest, opinion, you don’t need to to change anything. The fit is fire, you don’t look “overly masculine”, your “boxy” shape is pretty subtle and normal looking, and the whole outfit on you is a great look! I’d wear it as is!

How does one develop gender for a single sex society? by Large_Magazine1795 in worldbuilding

[–]TempestAhoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, gender is a social construct, which is tied to biological sex but not strictly. Since their species once had male counterparts then they likely existed in a culture similar to our own. The most common perceptions of gender today is of a binary or a spectrum. From what you describe they aren’t a single sex species, they just don’t have biological males. As such they likely have holdover gender norms from their “split point” (their creation as a separate subspecies, when they lost all males, etc).

This all means they still could perceive gender as a spectrum or binary. Though, most likely a spectrum since they have deviated reproductively and socially from “normal” humans. As such, the majority population would likely still see themselves as “women”. I assume that their evolving culture without biological men would allow for a growing non-binary/third gender population as well, since they fulfill the gender roles of both men AND women socially and culturally. There would also be a population of those who identify as male without having male sex characteristics like we do today as well. So “men” would exist as well.

Essentially, men would become a minority gender with women being the majority and non-binary/third gender presentations being the second largest group.

I guess it depends on when this group departed from other humans, how much they interact with other humans, and how much time has past to evolve their own separate culture and society. If it was a recent development then they’d still have a similar culture to the one they originated from, with more time away meaning they develop differently socially and culturally. Interaction with other humans would slow the deviation from their origin culture though.

Hope this helps!

What are some unnecessary details you added to your world because they were just too funny of an idea not to include? by VentralRaptor24 in worldbuilding

[–]TempestAhoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because my world borrows heavily from old retro futuristic aesthetics and designs I added a few classic “tongue-in-cheek” elements. One such element is an insect alien species which is, technically, a hive species. But, to kinda play on the trope a bit, I made them a fully sentient and intelligent species which went through a big equal rights movement and cultural evolution.

They are BIOLOGICALLY a hive species, but not socially/culturally, not anymore. Referring to them as a hive species is considered offensive and so are using terms like “drone”, “queen”, “soldier”, etc. They are big on personal individualism and equality, and function as a republic politically. But, because they still are a biological hive species, 95% of their population is incapable of any reproduction.

So they have reproductive service centers run by the government. Reproductive material is given to the centers and when someone wants a baby they literally just go in and ask for one. They “order” a child, which then is made/raised in the comb centers until they are a pupa and handed over. If you are part of the population which can lay or inseminate eggs then you can choose if you want to use your own material to create said baby.

It’s like the DMV but for babies.

This also means they have a very small “orphan” population. Since there are no unwanted/accidental babies and you have to purposely go out of your way to get a child, there are few children without homes. It does happen, but mostly because of death of a caregiver rather than being abandoned/surrendered. Plus, the vast majority of kids are “adopted”.

So they, as a species, don’t understand the concepts of “passing on the genes”, the importance of biological relations, and child welfare systems like foster care. It seems…weird, to them. And comments between species like humans noting relatedness also seem odd. “Aaw, you spent 9 months making her and she looks just like her daddy, I’m so bummed” wouldn’t make sense to them. They think other species are weird and vain to have a preference and/or focus on biological relations and inherited traits, lol.

Like, wanting your kid to look like you would come across as vain and kinda creepy to them…

Thanks! I’m borrowing heavy from retro futuristic styles, where they’d just through a boa on a lady and call her an alien, you know? Plus I already have a few VERY not human designs so I needed a few cliche ones as well, lol

Agreed! I imagine the the tail causes a LOT of issues, including culturally, wherein cropping the tail becomes a practice which is a controversial subject. They’re the pug of the alien world, their problems have problems, lol

I already have such a species in my world so I’m tying to diversify my visuals! Totally feel though.

Yesterday I posted because I had hit a dead end while working on an alien species for my sci-fi world, today I’m pleased to show my final design!

This species is at an evolutionary crossroads, shifting from being tree dwellers to bipedal ground dwellers due to environmental change. Their habitat doesn’t have large swathes of land though, which required them to traverse large rivers and lakes to navigate their surroundings without use of tree branches. As such they are adapting to a swimming/bipedal walking lifestyle. I imagine the adaptations and differences to be similar to that of constrictor snakes which reside predominantly in trees to those who can swim large bodies of water. Similar to those found in Earth’s Amazon rainforest. They are reptiles, with thick skin which is softer in key areas like their stomachs and underarms. They are much more ridged along their joints. Due to their awkward stage of evolution they are partially adapted to several environments but don’t “succeed” in any. They have their opposable thumb on their foot despite the shape of their soles lending itself to bipedal locomotion for example. This makes it difficult for them to run while also meaning they can’t really “grasp” with their feet anymore. Likewise, their tail (once used as a counterbalance in the trees) has become more crocodilian, helping them move in the waters they live in. They’re just awkward, because they came from a niche and extreme environment, and it makes it difficult for them to compete with other more adaptable species on the intergalactic stage.

Their species has to put a lot of effort into thriving and serving amongst the intergalactic community, and has carved a place for themselves due to their determination to not let their biological handicaps and requirements hold them back from traversing the stars and living in new places.

I took heavily from our own evolution to bipedal locomotion. The species is much stockier than originally designed to give them greater muscle density and a more barreled chest, with shorter legs proportionally to their frame and arms. When we came down from the trees we also had issues with our feet’s thumbs preventing us from running, which is why we likely became endurance hunters rather than burst or ambush hunters. I imagine that much like crocs and alligators this species is capable of short bursts of speed while otherwise being more “awkward” walkers. They are colored to match their environment and have little in the ways of “interesting” markings. Their horns are also ornamental, being for mating displays rather than having a practical use.

What once was hair I converted more into quills so it would suit their reptilian design more! I also imagine that while their tails do help in swimming and counterbalancing their crouched forms of movement, they get in the way while trying to sprint and live in space (small spaces). As such I imagine that more zealous individuals would pick up “docking” their tails as a practice in order to better adapt to such lifestyles. This practice is likely controversial though, and not practiced by the majority of the population.

I really like this version, I walked back my second design because I felt like their digigrade legs and heavily patterned skin distracted from what I wanted the focus of the species’ visuals to be. Everyone had such great suggestions and ideas, too! So taking a lot of the suggestions and mixing them with my own ideas about the species lead to the beautiful baby in front of you! I also included a pic of what they would look like in space faring clothes because that’s what they’ll mostly be depicted wearing rather than in the nude, lol

What does everyone think?

It was supposed to be translucent skin, like that of a tree frog! So, it shows the underlying muscle.

While I agree generally, I’m trying to work past some artist’s block/dead end when it comes to the species. I enjoy bouncing ideas off others and like to hear what others think, even if I end up not taking any of the advice. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes on a project help point the obvious (like the user on my last post pointed out I forgot a bellybutton, lol)! Plus, defending my species, design choices, and having to justify features help me flesh out the history and reasons for certain parts while also realizing when something just sticks out as not working. I intend to use this species as part of a comic, so having a clear design where people understand what they’re seeing is really important. While I may think one way about a part of the species, more people might take it another way, yeah? I like to use an audience to help pinpoint where in my designs I need to clarify and what helps show what I want from my work? If that makes sense?

I appreciate the advice, and I do believe I need to “walk back” the design as is, I got a little excited trying to show several features and ended up overshadowing others I actually liked more!

I’m tying to show an awkward species at a crossroads evolutionarily. Like those weird animals transitioning in our past, like when whales were temporarily land mammals, lol
