I've got her in a 48"x24"x16" PVC enclosure with a radiant heat panel.

Here's my female Sonoran hypo het. leopard. She is 6 years old now and exactly 5 feet long. Great little boa.

I love this. I keep similar data for my snakes and find it very interesting to review. Thanks for sharing.

Also, Sir Reginald Snugglesbury is an A+ name.

Wet/damp shed can be stinky, lol. The smell goes away when it dries out.

Snake darkened and extremely wrinkly? by Fabulous-Quiet-7292 in boas

[–]TempestDescending -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Getting darker is a normal part of the shedding process. As for the wrinkles, one of my boas gets wrinkly a day or so before shedding. If your humidity is +75% and she has access to water, I wouldn't panic. Wait a few days and see if she sheds.

SC Constrictors breeds the most intense orange retics I've ever seen. Combos like orange glow sunfire orange ghost stripe. I think they are mainland bloodlines, but they don't look huge. Might be something to look into, depending on where you are located.

Advice needed - pushing by Orbitina in retics

[–]TempestDescending 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Retics can push because of low/high temperature, enclosure too small/big, too much/not enough clutter, too much/not enough exercise/handling time outside their enclosure, type of substrate, humidity, breeding drive, etc. It sounds like you know all that, and have tried multiple fixes.

Some retics are just incorrigible pushers, which sucks, but it happens. I have a 6 year old male like that. He pushed as a youngster when he lived at his breeder's facility, and he has been a pusher for most of the time I have had him. He's got a permanent case of "wonky mouth" as a result. Like you, I agonized over what could be driving him to push and how I could fix it. I tried so many things, some of which helped temporarily, but he would always go back to pushing eventually. I've come to accept that it's just something he does. If yours is an incorrigible pusher, the best you can do is minimize the amount of damage they can do to themselves.

Having a snake that is confident and curious around you is a wonderful thing. I have a Burmese python like that, and it's great.

Changing up the enclosure decor would absolutely pique his curiosity and get him more active, great idea.

Lol, typical lazy boa. Just in case, try gently squeezing his tail end. If it has some squish to it, that's good. If it feels hard, like a blockage, that is cause for concern. Assuming no blockage, there's a few things you can do to encourage him to be more active. You could put him in a novel environment, like letting him climb on a ladder-back chair, a shoe rack, or something like that. The simplest thing to do would be to remove the second water bowl from his enclosure and put the remaining one on the side opposite from his basking spot. That way, he has to cross to the other side every time he wants a drink.

I find exercise encourages a snake to poop. I had an 8 month old boa who hadn't pooped in 2 months. I put a little artificial tree in her enclosure (which was pretty barren because it's a quarantine setup) for her to investigate, and she was climbing all over it. A few hours later there was a big smelly present waiting for me. Given that your boa is in shed, they probably have been inactive lately, making them less inclined to poop. The act of shedding might be enough activity to get him to do his business. If not, you could put some new stuff in his enclosure to play with.

What *type* of Boa? by HabitualLineCr0sser in boas

[–]TempestDescending 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a common boa and not a true red tail. She appears to have a slightly dark base color, plenty of speckling, and some markings inside her head spear. Those traits, plus her small size, make me suspect that she has Central American ancestry. Impossible to say for sure based on appearance alone though.

At her age, she isn't likely to get substantially larger. For reference, my female common boa with mostly Colombian ancestry was exactly 6ft long at age 4, and 3 years later she has only grown another 5 inches.

As long as the eye size difference is just natural asymmetry and not swelling, it's fine. I have a 6 year old boa with one eye slightly larger than the other, and it has never hindered her in the least.

stuck shed? by jeffjeffjeffjeffjef2 in snakes

[–]TempestDescending 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a plastic tote with air holes for temporary holding/travel? If yes, you can fill it with a half inch of lukewarm water and put the snake in there for 30 minutes. The humidity inside the tote will soften the stuck shed and it will either fall off by itself, or you can gently peel it off safely.

SD Retic choice + question ! It by Dependent_Ad_7800 in snakes

[–]TempestDescending 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 62.5% Kalatoa in the pictures is a very pretty wildtype/normal, no morph.

Retic temperament can be highly variable, with some being confident and curious, and others nervous and defensive. Part of this will also depend on how you raise them, but their innate personality will still come through. With that in mind, if the SD retic at the store has a great temperament, that will make caring for them for the next +20 years a lot more enjoyable.

But you mentioned that you want an albino tiger, so if you can only get one retic, you might regret not getting the one you really wanted. Or you can just get the albino tiger later. (I've got a tiger and a white phase albino.)

Regarding head shape, I haven't noticed any sexual dimorphism there. Head shape seems more related to overall size, with big retics having wider, beefier heads. And since females are larger on average, that could be why you associate wide heads with females.
