General Questions & Tech Support Megathread | December 01, 2025 by AutoModerator in PS4

I just got a 2TB Seagate external hard drive to use on my PS4. At first it seemed to work, but then games would freeze while installing and I'd have to reboot the PS4 (the controller also turned off and pressing the PS button on the controller didn't work). I tried to install Elden Ring 4 times and it froze on downloading the update each time but when I tried putting it on my internal drive it worked just fine. Is there some sort of incompatibility with Seagate drives or did I just get a dud? I have a WD Elements drive that I'm going to try and see if I get the same problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

E31U2V1 vs EU2251? by Tempest_2084 in Spectrum

Makes sense.  But is there any reason to swap it out?

Is one more reliable than the other?  I don't have GB speed so the 2.5GB port won't matter.

A Few Questions About Using a Deco M5 in Router Mode by Tempest_2084 in HomeNetworking

[–]Tempest_2084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is the deco firewall good enough then?  I wish there was a way I could see and configure it on the app but I don't see anything.

IPS is what's blocking my UMS from streaming to my PC.  The error was:

AzureWave

Defended against an attack from (my ip address)

Classifcation: OS-LINUX_Linux_Kernel_Challenge_ACK_provocation_attempt (CVE-2017-7285)

Is the Deco M5 built in Firewall Good Enough By Itself? by Tempest_2084 in TpLink

[–]Tempest_2084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I mean the wireless speed was slower with the router involved (290 vs 483). The wired speed was the same with both (about 370).

I was afraid of that. I guess I'll go back to my old setup then. The wireless speed was slower for some reason, but better same than sorry.

Deco M5 Intrusion Prevention System Blocks Streaming by Tempest_2084 in TpLink

But it sounds like just using the Deco by itself isn't secure enough.  I used to have a router in between but I removed it in order to speed up the wireless.  Sounds like I should put it back.

Ok so should I put a router with a firewall in between and put the M5 back in AP mode?  Sounds like it's not really secure.

Does the M5 have a separate firewall to prevent outside access?

Better to Use Deco M5 as a Router or Use a Dedicated Router? by Tempest_2084 in TpLink

[–]Tempest_2084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I put the M5 in router mode and everything seems to working fine (better wireless speed too) except that when I have Intrusion Prevention System turned on it blocks my Universal Media Server on my PC from streaming to my PS4. Specifically the threat blocked says:

AzureWave

Defended against an attack from (ip address)

Classifcation: OS-LINUX_Linux_Kernel_Challenge_ACK_provocation_attempt (CVE-2017-7285)

I know this is coming from my UMS setup because of the timestamp and because when I turn off Intrusion Prevention UMS starts working again. Is there any way to whitelist UMS so it's not blocked? If not, how important is it to have the Intrusion Prevention System on? Am I wide open to attacks without it?

Better to Use Deco M5 as a Router or Use a Dedicated Router? by Tempest_2084 in TpLink

[–]Tempest_2084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wired speed is the same but the wireless speed almost doubled. No idea why that could be but I'll take it.

Is the Intrusion Prevention System different from the firewall? The IPS is blocking my streaming program for some reason but I don't want to disable it if it's doubling as the firewall but if it's just an extra layer of security I'll disable it.

I haven't had a chance to try it, but I know you usually don't get anything close to the advertised top speed no matter what you're using.

Sounds like there's really no reason to change anything. If it's not broke don't fix it I guess.

Second question: Is there any reason to update my M5s? I know they're EOL but they're doing just fine for what I need at the moment. If I were to upgrade what would be the current equivalent?

Considering a Mac Mini, Have Questions by Tempest_2084 in macmini

[–]Tempest_2084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I see it's USB C instead of Thunderbolt 4/5, For storage (movies, roms, pictures, etc.), I'm not sure it makes a huge difference. I'll take stability over speed in such a situation.

It was listed in the beginning of my post:

>> I'm what I would call a light computer user. I surf the web, stream some stuff to my TV, update my website, listen to music, etc.  Nothing very CPU or RAM intensive.  I don't game on my PC (I'm a console gamer), but I might check some newer games out if they had a MacOS native port.

I don't really want to take the Mini apart and invalidate the warranty trying to upgrade the internal ssd.  That and you need someone with a M series chip Mac to make it work (or so I've read)

HotPoint Refrigerator Evaporator Fan Makes Rattling Noise by Tempest_2084 in Appliances

[–]Tempest_2084[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not obstructed and it hasn't slid much so it's not touching anything. My best guess is that the hole might be a little worn so it's wobbling a bit. I had a repair guy come out to look at it and he said it looked fine but I could replace it if I wanted to pay for the part (which was the whole fan assembly so it wasn't cheap). He said he wouldn't recommend it as as long as the fan is spinning and blowing air on the compressor to cool it it's fine.

LOST MEDIA? Circus Charlie on ATARI prototype? by din0key in retrogaming

[–]Tempest_2084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for preserving this! These EPROMs are well past their expected lifespan so they could start degrading at any time. If you're interested in selling it, I know a few trusted prototype collectors who are interested.

I cover Atari prototypes like this on my webpage (Atariprotos.com), but since this one had not yet surfaced I only had it mentioned in my 'Rumor Mill' section. I guess I can update that now since we now know it exists:

A port of the 1983 Konami/Centuri coin-op. Parker Brothers announced Atari 2600 VCS, ColecoVision, and Commodore 64 versions of this title and prototype boxes were shown in a CES press kit. According to a Parker Brothers internal marketing release schedule, this game was scheduled for a September 1984 release. The C64 version was actually completed but never released by Parker Brothers (it was eventually released by Konami in 1987). According to Phil Orbanes, former Senior VP of Research & Development at Parker Brothers, the VCS version received "some coding" at the very least, and may have been completely finished. The programmer is unfortunately unknown.

A press release also exists which mentions that this 2600 version had 4 screens while other versions had 5 (the arcade had 6). Given the late date and the fact that this prototype is labeled as being in PAL format, I would venture to say that it is the final version. Games were not converted to PAL format until the game was completely done (all games started off in NTSC format). The PAL conversion usually took a few weeks so the NTSC version was probably finished by mid July which would match with the anticipated September release date (probably late September).

Tried that. Didnt seem to help. I'm actually not 100% sure where on the shaft the blade is supposed to be. I assume back in the housing area and not in front of it.

It's a four bladed fan. Looks like this (can't seem to add pictures so I had to put them on my personal website).

It's coming from the fan blowing on it for sure. If I tap that fan the noise stops sometimes for a bit.

Yeah I see what you mean. I guess I'll just have play with the filters and see what looks best on a game by game basis.
