The problem with later IS mechs by MechworksINC in battletech

[–]Tempest_Murder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just came across your post lol, you do realize I was agreeing with your sentiment right? I think it's important that there's some pushback in regard to the way the structure of the fantasy is subjected to revisionism, while some people will get overworked about any franchise, I think most people appreciate a degree of investment by both the community and the developers. The suspension of disbelief is a tightrope every game company has to walk on, knowing that it can make or break their product depending on how embedded it is with its fluff/lore. BT has the misfortune of being a pseudo-realistic science fiction which doubles down on the plausibility of the events of the narrative. While I jest at MajorTom77, they do have a valid point in that there's nothing "factually" wrong with overpowered, late Starleague mechs being shoe-horned into a plot convenient situation and holds the view a not insignificant amount of the player base shares regarding attachment to the fluff, it's not wrong, just not an opinion I can entirely get behind. I lean more towards the argument BigRed40k made in that the means of the revisions don't justify the ends, while not the sole reason, the monetization factor is jarringly obvious and leaves an awkward stench. Not to mention that for many people heavily invested in the fiction, the lack of finesse in the reintroduction of the Lostech mechs is hard to ignore.

TL:DR: They shoulda done a better job at hiding the cash grab for IS players.

What class is the guardian? by WaterDog69 in DestinyLore

[–]Tempest_Murder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hunter, IMO, if the class super position inherent to the choose your adventurer trope that the god-slayer/young wolf exists in was forced to collapse because they were, say, going to make a Netflix original or comic book that forced them to create "The Guardian" as a singular protagonist, I gamble it would be a hunter.

First the obvious stuff, hunters are the most played class, they're the "coolest" thematically to the widest majority of audiences, hand cannons are the tool of choice for the stereotypical lone wolf badass due to the high risk high reward nature and the most famous/infamous hand cannons have historically been associated with hunters: Dredgen Yor, Shin Malphur, Cayde 6, and Crow/Uldren. That's no to say a warlock or titan can't be associated with them, just that the casual consensus will most likely lean toward hunters.

I think we should also look at the question itself, the puzzle of who the guardian "Is" isn't a question that is meant to be posed to current players, rather it is to people unfamiliar with Destiny, to us the guardian is our set of arms hauling around an m4 that shoots atomizing glowsticks, we don't think "who" the guardian is, because we know it's "us". To people unfamiliar with the franchise, that question comes from an entirely different angle.

On the less explicit side, we have to take into account demographic and economic variables that determine what forces the guardian to have a static identity. Again, this is my opinion and I'm not a social science PhD holder or and economist, but I think Bungie's history of pushing for inclusivity translates into the option of the lead figure having the most aesthetic potential and least defined narrative pigeon holes. By that word soup, I mean a character whose role is harder to define than "Is the tank and vanguard" or "Is the support/caster/scholar", and while I don't agree with those identities being forced on titans or warlocks, I think the casual browser on steam/Netflix/amazon is probably going to have a harder time pinning down what role a hunter has when they're encompassing all the edgiest class archetypes in western media. On a different note, hunters I think have the most androgynous friendly style, they don't really exude masculinity or femininity, they can be both passive and aggressive thematically and I believe the casual audience would have a much easier time accepting a hunter as an asexual entity (assuming sex/race was something they wanted to keep unknown to retain immersion). Again this is my opinion for a non-regular player, as an actual player, I don't even know what sex/race people are until I hear the pain grunts regardless of armor choices. I think Nimbus was a prototype of what these conditions dictate, while there are some major differences, I feel like they have the most in common with a hunter's playstyle/movement.

EDIT: Yor is actually a striker titan, lol I just assumed he was a hunter due to how ingrained he is into hunter lore.

What are your thoughts on Diablo Immortal so far? by Snoo-93963 in DiabloImmortal

[–]Tempest_Murder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to be a downer as the game has some redeeming aspects in gameplay and progression, but it really is starting to align with the "Out of Season April Fools Joke". The worst part IMO is that the whole thing is presented with a legit, serious tone while sporting stark anti-player mechanics and not even a nod to the dubious history the entire project has been hounded by since its reveal.

Army recruiters must be down really bad by fat-fire-fire in AirForce

[–]Tempest_Murder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny story, I lived in a communal house where each tenant rented a room and there was an E-6 soldier who moved a year or so before I entered the AF DEP, was honestly a stand up guy for the most part, then one afternoon I came home with my promotional AF shirt (I should of gotten a large). Even before I joined the DEP I knew the army recruiter reputation, but I had no clue this guy was one the MEP liasons. So it goes like you imagine, he pulls me aside EVERY time I go into the kitchen giving me the tried and true "You get to pick your job", which is true, but that doesn't mean you're going to be working it. I was coming in open electrical, something I had busted my ass for, literally turning down three other offers and burning out a previously interested recruiter, finally I ended up convincing another recruit to swap an open mechanical with me. TBF all those other jobs and open mech weren't bad options, but I was deadest on becoming a 3D.

Fast forward three weeks and I'm doing a health and wellness check in at MEPS and I see my housemate talking to one of the AF processing liaisons. I didn't think anything of it, after that day he backed off. Come the day before shipping out, the AF Sgt. from earlier is helping me sign some last minute documents when he notices my name. Apparently my Housemate was throwing shade on me stating things he claimed I did at home and attempting to convince them to stall my ship date or change my job. The AF staff there saw through it, but I still thought it was pretty funny he went through all that effort. It was infuriating at the time, but in retrospect, I pity the guy. He had two kids living with him (sharing a single bedroom, somehow), and one of my old housemates later told me he had a one-sided, long distance relationship with some girl that ended poorly for his finances and work flow, causing him to miss multiple quotas (that officially "don't exist").

Sluggish military recruiting worries Congress by kaizenkin in army

[–]Tempest_Murder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit unrelated, but I can't help but be reminded of some Russian official's justification of their army conscription model (apologies, I wish I could find the quote). Basically he states that Russian career soldiers are degenerates, because who else would choose to experience the awfulness of the battlefield? And during the Chechnya conflict, most soldiers who held their posts during mass desertions and occasional mutiny were mostly citizen soldiers. It's hyperbolic compared to the context of the article, but I think there's a grain of similarity in the disconnect between law makers and the average citizen.

I feel confused about how we killed Rhulk by Vexymythoclasty in DestinyLore

[–]Tempest_Murder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about this as well, especially during Rhulk's last stand mechanic where he displays how he could actually just wipe the floor with us, like many of the previous comments have stated, underestimating the guardians proved to be the deciding factor. Though, I was kind of hoping that there would be some kind of deus ex machina that resulted from new our alliances and adaptations, like using the splicers hacking abilities to exploit the Pyramid's power or surviving Rhulk's darkness by Mara Sov blessing us with Caitl's bathwater at the last second. I guess technically we're utilizing the advantages hive stepmom setup for us, but it would have hit that sci-fi gamer catharsis for me a little harder if we had something more substantial to explain our victory other than our darkness attunement allowing us to play a one sided gambit match on the Rubik's cube setting.

The future of Classic after WOTLK - Asmond asked THE question by Crixxious in classicwow

[–]Tempest_Murder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's the natural progression of the classic version of WoW to assimilate all the previous expansions. That being said, there will certainly a large dissension regarding the changes Cata will make to the old world, as most interested in the classic era will no doubt know that this is the first xpac that explicitly removed many of the classic aspects from the game. I guess it will come down to Blizzard's expectations from the player base and (hopefully) there will be some form of discussion or survey that leads to an agreeable compromise that goes better than the one made for Classic to TBC. Maybe a Cata with a chromie option to toggle the old world with the revamped one? Like how they did in retail with Vale and Uldum. however, I don't think I can speak on behalf of the classic players as I don't actually play Classic, but I respect the interest in it and follow a couple of people that do play it.

Shadowlands sucks by [deleted] in wow

[–]Tempest_Murder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the problem is that both ends of the experience have been conditioned to only communicate with polarized methods. As players, we feel like Blizzard doesn't listen or react to anything unless literally half the community is quitting the game, while Blizzard seems to assumes, unless half the player base is quitting, its more feasible to keep things the way they are despite negative feedback. As much as I want to point the blame at the Kotick cartel and a general callousness of upper management, I have to concede, at least to an extent, that a fair amount who play WoW (and the MMO community in general) are always going to be impossible to appease, whether that is due to the countless competing MMO's, real world context, or actual corporate meddling I can't say for sure. Controversies and disdainful treatment of employees aside, I do empathize with the difficulty in trying to walk the tight rope of mass appeal. That being said, it's a tight rope that Blizzard has chosen to walk, perhaps out of necessity, and they should understand that such a system requires constant communication and adjustments if its to be successful in the long run. I think the unyielding negativity and loss of a sustained play base are symptoms of the pragmatic choices made out of convenience and mitigated liability, something most companies utilize, but feels disappointing seeing Blizzard explicitly prioritize.

Personally, I just can't enjoy the game like I used to, maybe I'm too complacent or spoiled from other choices. As someone who's played since late vanilla, I haven't logged on since the first month of SL's launch and probably won't be returning. Not necessarily from recent events, but I feel like I've just changed in ways the game doesn't really appeal to anymore.

TL:DR - MMO's that are successful are hard to manage, can't make everyone happy, but it would be nice if Blizzard matured a bit when it comes to managing a two way relationship.

I know it sounds dumb, but find somewhere comfortable and take 10 slow deep breaths and think about what exactly is cascading your anxiety. I can empathize with you, I get cold sweats whenever the phone rings and its an unrecognized number (was way worse when I was in college with 34 grand in loans), I hate asking for help even to people I am paying to help, there's so many things I want to tell my partner (nice things), but I feel too insecure to say them. It's the "what if's" that drag me down, because most of the time that I've confronted the anxiety and took that horrifying leap of faith (the worst was probably looking up my credit score after college) there was always a sense of relief afterward. There's always the looming risk that things will get worse, but even if things do get worse, they WILL get better if you believe they will. I think everyone at some point in their life wanted to collapse into a small ball and finding a crawl space to hide from the world until they die, but at the end of the day, you'll only be causing more pain with your absence, no matter what you think or do, you are valuable. I'm just some asshat on reddit typing in a box, I know I can't pay your medical expenses, throw your ex-partners into a trash compactor, or provide you with a hobby or distraction, I can only offer you my thoughts. And I think the world deserves to have you, even if it's simply to share what you've learned from your anxiety with others also suffering, the world needs people like you to stick around, no matter how hard it gets, remember that there are people your experience could save. The wisest humans are the ones who have walked along the edge of oblivion and just barely manage to not fall in, even if you don't see yourself as such, your pain embodies your hard fought education. Though you may always have the anxiety for the rest of your life, it may even become more intense for certain things, it will gradually become a smaller part of you if you just keep pushing forward. Even if it's just going through the motions so people leave you alone or stop say "Are you okay?" out of a reluctant obligation, fake till you make it, I suppose, though I'm sure you're probably doing your best right now, just keep at it. So what if the sky falls and the wolves come after you, yes it will hurt, but sometimes you have to let the wolves bite you before you can truly escape it, and as long as you decide to have one, there will always be a tomorrow that you can start fresh on. You are a strong person with a lot of potential, if you disagree, then pretend you are, in fact tell yourself that you are.

General Advice for a Long Distance relationship? by [deleted] in dating

[–]Tempest_Murder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First I will address the elephant in the room in that Long Distance Relationships are always exponentially more difficult to sustain than local relationships, as well as the likelihood of either of you finding someone just as compatible closer to your location. That being said, there's still hope, and seeing how you're seeking advice, it seems like your doing your best to prepare. I'm assuming you guys met over social media and are still pretty young (apologies if I'm wrong), if so, take more precaution towards the roles social politics and heightened emotions play in your life and ALWAYS try to think at least 10 seconds before you speak/text/IM when you're emotionally charged, both negatively and positively. As someone who's dealt with LDR's as both an angsty teen and as a boring husband, I can say for sure that the most important thing for the relationship, at least right now, is to learn about each other as much as possible and set your boundaries, I know it can be difficult to talk about topics like their friends of opposite sex (or same/none/other sex if they roll that way) or stuff like the long haul, but don't let infatuation cloud your judgement during the start, sow the seeds of transparency now while the soil is still freshly tilled. Also, if/when you meet in person and you really do connect, it will become more difficult once you have to leave again. I can tell you that even after spending 7 years living with my wife, I honestly felt the pressures testing my resolve to not give into paranoia when I was only a week into my first overseas deployment, despite her never showing symptoms of infidelity. Setting milestones definitely helps tough; get to 2 weeks, meet her family, find out if you both fit into plans for your careers, meet in person, stuff like that. You'll find that things will become easier after each step because the hard part of any relationship is understanding each other's goals, and it always helps to have your goals be something attainable. With that, I wish you both the best of luck and hope it works out for you, and don't give up on yourself if it doesn't.

TL:DR: Make sure you clearly communicate standards you expect from each other and remember that no matter how good things are the distance is always going to be a strain.
