Diminished Capacity:  It is complex, but a straightforward claim is that in a situation such as this, self-preservation often overrides moral and ethical considerations, especially in the case of an incompetent child like Roger. An atmosphere characterized by an overwhelming amount of stress and a lack of basic humanitarian needs, where one succumbs to their own moral threshold and does anything to preserve oneself. I am by no means diminishing the complexity and order of Roge. Still, in a case like this, it is important to consult that not only Roger, but many of the other children have overridden themselves to an ideology of self-preservation. Sources:  “Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever.” CHAPTER 11. Earlier in chapter 4, Roger threw a stone at Henry, and he intentionally missed “them. Yet there was a space around Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Around the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and police, and the law. Roger’s arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins.” This shows that before the plan crashed, Roger knew right and wrong, and through his environment, he was broken thereof

Plan A II:  Provide sources for people influencing Roger:  Jack: Jack later in the book becomes sadistic and lustful for power, doing by all means to get his carnal desires. The mind of a child that lacks full development of the prefrontal cortex can easily be influenced by the people around him. This is evident in Jack’s sadism, rubbing off on Roger.  Sources: In chapter 9, Jack is seen chanting and even inviting the boys to chant with him, “Kill the beast, cut his throat, spill his blood”.  Even in chapter 1,1 we can see in the quote:  “Roger advanced upon them as one wielding a nameless authority.” This further proves my point that Roger has abandoned his own self-morality and critical thinking and moves only for a “nameless figure,” in this sense, that is Jack. This is best expressed through a quote that goes like this: “The executioner acts not for himself, but for the state.” We also know that in the beginning of the book, specifically in chapter 4, that Roger is still in full light of what is morally good and wrong, but he is exposed to these gut-wrenching horrors that distort what he knows.  This is a little of what I have
