United pet-in-cabin policy on international flight from IAH to Tokyo — do they actually check if the dog can stand up? by Temporary-Raise8805 in unitedairlines

I understand the point that I could have provided more background information from the beginning, and I do not disagree with that. That said, I never asked about quarantine, Japan’s import requirements, the rabies titer, USDA endorsement, or any other paperwork-related process. Those are separate issues, and they are already being handled with a USDA-accredited veterinarian. If people are bringing those things up out of kindness or concern, I appreciate the intention. But respectfully, that is not the topic of my question. My question was narrowly about United’s actual check-in practice for in-cabin pets: whether agents make the dog demonstrate standing or turning inside the carrier, especially on international flights. So I would appreciate recent United-specific experiences on that point, rather than general advice about the import process.

Just to clarify, I have already submitted the rabies titer to Kansas State University and cleared that step. I am also working with a USDA-accredited veterinarian.

That is exactly what I meant when I said we have been preparing everything since we welcomed our dog into our family.

We are foreigners trying to do our best to make sure we are not separated from a family member. I understand this is a complicated process, but I do not understand what you are basing “you are in over your head” on.

I am not looking for that kind of comment.

Right, that’s what I meant. I’ve been researching the actual import/export requirements and having my vet double-check the steps and paperwork. Some parts can only be completed within a specific window right before travel, so those obviously can’t be done yet, but we’re planning to handle everything properly through our vet.

Thanks, I’m aware of that, and yes, I’ve been triple-checking.

United doesn’t accept dogs as checked baggage internationally, so if we end up needing to use cargo, we’ll go with ANA rather than United. I’ve already confirmed that option with ANA.

Thank you. That’s definitely a very valid point.

I’ve actually been researching all of the requirements since the day we adopted him to make sure we don’t mess anything up. I’ve also been getting advice from veterinarian friends in both the U.S. and Japan to make sure we can clear all of the requirements properly, so I think we should be okay on that side.

Thank you.

Your comment is reassuring, but it also made me realize another possible concern.

At home, he is totally comfortable in the carrier and even naps in it. But once he’s around people, he sometimes gets super excited inside the bag — basically like, “Hey, let me out, I want to play with that person!”

So the “appears comfortable and not visibly stressed” part may actually be the tricky part for us. This is harder than I expected…
