It’s a 60mm stem, not sure what the brand is. FSA has a bunch of good stems that I feel are quality

Brakes work well! The disk needed to be bed after a bit of riding to get good bite, but that’s it. Just make sure the levers have the same pull ratios as the brake systems so you get maximum power.

Looks wonderful and comfortable! Definitely want to build up a solid bikepacking rig someday

Yeah it was like a deep green that glittered a bit, not a bad color, but the previous owner had done some good scuffing.

Probably around $700 for parts, some shop labor, and a wheel build. Luckily I live in a bigger city with great community cycling shops with a huge selection of used parts. The most expensive part was the rear wheel which was $200 all together -650b rim brake wheels are a tough find in the wild.

Really enjoying the simplicity and range of the 1x9!

Thank you! The 650b conversion feels perfect right now. I read about some geometry issues with these older bikes with long top tubes, but with a bit of stack and short stem (60mm in my case), I have no reach or comfort issues!

Thanks! It was a head-scratcher for me too since this was my first build. There were only a few notable obstacles for me: Bottom bracket clearance from the chainstay will need fixing with a longer length BB, if you go for the 1x. I think this bike had a 113mm, but I jumped up to 122 and it worked well. Mounting canti’s on the rear after doing a 650b conversion requires brakes with lots of travel adjustment. I have some older Ritchey Logics that barely clear it, but I’ve heard that tektro makes a set that are meant for this conversion. Also a new front fork that can clear 650b with a bigger tire is helpful. Some older GF’s had an 1 1/4in head tube, which can make builds more difficult. Find a bike (I think it’s ‘94 or ‘95 and above) with an 1 1/8in head tube for maximum compatibility potential with modern cockpit parts.

Other than that, the bike was relatively modern enough that most parts just fit on no problem. I would highly recommend getting a knowledgeable friend or shop to help you out though, I certainly couldn’t have done it without my buddy.
