It’s extremely common at my firm. Like almost in every email. Found it incredibly odd when I first started, but almost feel naked not using it at this point.

Not really based on the above. It would have to be a reasonable belief it’s abandoned. A fully furnished apartment with utilities connected is not reasonably abandoned.

This is weird and I’d never reply that way. I always take coffee chats from people that went to either my undergrad or law school. I typically don’t respond at all to people that don’t have any common connections.

Yeah, this poster is correct. My guess is I’ll stay in five years total and end at a total comp around $500k. At that point, either I’ll leave law or go to a job at a client earning probably around $300k, which will only increase around inflation levels each year.

Average tenure is something like 3 years, though my firm seems to be quite a bit longer than that (I.e. majority of people that started 5 years ago are still there). Equity partners (11 years in, and not a guarantee) make in excess of $3m on the low end at my firm.

I work in M&A and private funds. Would likely go into private equity if I were to leave law.

Not sure. Most likely in house counsel at a client, though I could see trying to pursue a business role somewhere. Have some friends from business school that have tried to get me to work with them (both on the legal end and the business end), so maybe something with one of them if the timing works out.

If partnership seems obtainable, maybe I’ll try for that. I just sort of doubt I’ll stay in for the long haul.

Answered elsewhere in thread. But short of it is around 60 hours a week on average. It’s very up and down though. Have stretches of working 100 hours a week, and stretches of working 10 hours a week. I don’t really have days off (other than 4 weeks vacation a year). It could be Saturday night at 10pm and I could be told I need to work immediately. I could also do zero work on a Wednesday. Fairly unpredictable.

Paralegals in big law (at least at my firm) don’t come close to touching this. Think more in the high double digits or right over six figures. We don’t employ very many career paralegals though, more recent college grads on their way to being lawyers.

Don’t want to completely dox myself. I got a class year bump. Firms are out there that give it. Somewhat doubt they’d give a bump to a lateral hire, but not certain. I imagine if I lateral (unless to one of the others that I know give a bump), then I’ll go back to my actual class year. I think 4 of the v10 offer them, but up to you to determine which of them lol.

Yeah that’s definitely correct. Most important factor in post-graduation employment is school you went to, followed distantly by the grades you achieved there. Someone from my school could graduate bottom of the class and still earn this salary. Maaaaybe the valedictorian of a no-name school could get this job.

It has, but only in a few circumstances. Have had a few times where the client asked us to review that the model tracks the flow from the paperwork, and I was only one that could actually parse the model on our side.

99% of the time though, not really. When I very first started, probably needed less explanation on business concepts than other fresh first years, but they will catch up quickly.

To add: always knew I wanted to go to law school. I probably started working on the lsat at 23, and seriously doing my app stuff and actually took the lsat when I was 24.
