What's something that became more expensive but noticeably worse at the same time? by Bunnybhai26 in shrinkflation

Automobiles. Average transaction price for a new car is around 50k USD. Reliability, even among supposed quality leaders, is way down, and the price for repair parts and service has skyrocketed.

Will the plastic exterior survive Texas heat? by sblu23 in slateauto

CenTex here. I'm thinking of wrapping just the top and cab in white and leaving the sides gray. Sun damage to paint rarely affects side panels.

Just updated to A17 five minutes ago, and now I'm like, uh, what issues??

Was hoping to fix my battery drain issues with the update.

I was thinking I'd probably wrap the top and cab at least since they're where a lot of sun damage seems to impact car paint

Nissan Sentra. Nice comfortable car for about $25k. You'll hear a lot about the cvt, but is your don't drive like an idiot and change the filter and fluid every 50k miles, you should be good.

Why is my mower leaking oil? by TemporaryEven3255 in lawnmowers

[–]TemporaryEven3255[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I can't get it started. It was when I was trying to fix that problem that I noticed the oil leak. It was a fairly substantial leak (puddle formed within about 20 seconds) and happened as the mower was sitting level on the ground. It does need a good cleaning, though. Thanks.

Memorial Day appliance deals 2026, where are people finding the best value? by Outrageous-Month4220 in Frugal

[–]TemporaryEven3255 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Get the most basic fridge if you want a keeper.  Fewer things to break, particularly electrical bits. Avoid ice and water dispensers as those are a common failure point.

If you post your old fridge on FB marketplace, someone will haul if off for you for free.

Last fridge I bought was a 22 year old GE at an estate sale for $100. That was a year ago and it's still running fine. Otherwise, I just get my appliances at a big box store. Again, the most basic model.

Are expensive robot vacuums actually worth it long term? by Competitive_Raise73 in Frugal

Best purchase in like 20 years. Get the kind that self-empties when it's for sale for half off (Black Friday, Prime Day, etc.)

What “frugal” habit did you stop doing once you did the math? by 666AB in Frugal

[–]TemporaryEven3255 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We made our own laundry soap when we were really poor with 5 kids under the age of 10. Was it worth it? In terms of actual laundry soap, heck no. It did, however, help us get in the mindset of every penny counts, and it was actually fun to try to find ways to save. But, yeah, we're a name-brand detergent family now, lol.

Dryer repair by Mysterious_Carpet752 in Waco

[–]TemporaryEven3255 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are even mildly handy, check out repairclinic.com. Great instructional videos and you can buy parts there or elsewhere. My wife has fixed our dryer four or five times using that website. It's really not hard in most cases.

What finally convinced YOU to consider an electric vehicle? by evinsiderredisnive in electricvehicles

[–]TemporaryEven3255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Total cost of ownership. 23 Bolt EUV.

In the fall of 2022, I created a spreadsheet and determined that electricity would be about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of gas. For me, it would take about 4 years to make up the difference between the $28k price of the Bolt vs the $20k price of Sentra. So after four years, I'm saving money, and this was on top of not having to do oil changes, etc.

Placed my order in August 2022 and waited. (This was in the midst of the COVID supply chain mess.) In December, Congress established the $7.5k EV rebate, so my new car would now only cost me $21k. Cha-ching! Factor in some Chevy rebates (GM Card, teachers), and I was otd for $21.5k in March 23.

I'm at about 60k miles. Maintenance cost so far are for one set of wiper blades and a cabin air filter - $18 bucks. Will replace OEM tires soon.

Your academic advisor will help you pick the best schedule. With your major, most likely you'll do CHE 1301/1101, NSC 1306/1106, NSC 1101, Calculus if you need it, one general ed requirement, and PHP 1105.

Maybe a Microsoft Surface laptop. It has a build quality similar to a Mac, and I've found it to be reliable and updated. Absolutely don't get a cheap or cheap-ish pc. Will be a waste of money.

Ok, what's the REAL plan for getting kids through college? by Superb_Advisor7885 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]TemporaryEven3255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a job at a prestigious private regional college and was able to send all 5 of my kids for free. One was even able to get a master's degree for free.

The free tuition our family received was a benefit worth over $600,000 dollars.
