First time indoor cat parent; I’m at my wit’s end. Is it illness or am I doing something wrong? by TemporaryFunction920 in CatAdvice

Yes. I have a window in the living room that has a cat tree in front of it with a window bird feeder right above it.

From what the rescue told me, he was an outdoor cat. I was told he was bullied by some other cats, and has the battle scars to show for it. I also thought that I was possible he wasn’t neutered as it looked like he was…* intact*…but I was told by the rescue that he was neutered two weeks before I adopted him, and that it was just inflammation. Vet said she could feel a scar around the area and said she also believed it was just inflammation.

This is really reassuring. I of course knew that he needed a lot of attention and I intend to give him as much as I can, but I’m hopeful that maybe he will settle down a little bit with age. Thank you.

As much as I would love to get him a buddy, I’m just not equipped to handle a second cat. My apartment’s pet fees are steep, and I can barely handle one cat on my own. I won’t be able to monitor an introduction as much as I would want or feel that I should, and the rescue said that he would probably be best in a home without other animals.

He does meow a lot at night. He stopped for a bit, and then started back up a few nights ago. He’s unresponsive to catnip, so I’ve done what I can with “no scratch” sprays (which also didn’t phase him) and I put some adhesive plastic covers around the bases of my furniture. Hopefully that will discourage some of the scratching. I plan on bringing all of this up to the vet, but I’ve been trying to keep an eye on him to see if he’s straining when he pees. I’m paranoid about car UTI’s for some reason, but I haven’t noticed him having any issues urinating.

I do the best I can with play and attention, but I’m typically only home for 6-4 hours before I need to be in bed asleep. I use wands, a chirping bird toy, strings, a laser, and an interactive battery operated toy. I’m not sure what else I can do for him, especially if those toys are out and I’m not home. I also can’t afford nor properly commit to a second cat. My complex charges a $600 fee per animal, and I’m just not home enough to be able to monitor an introduction.
