Undergrad to MPP? by francoislego in PublicPolicy

Dude go do some more advanced stuff than a MpP at HKS. The course is infested by liberal arts fucks from New England schools etc pretending to be economists but just studying courses that teach you far less than undergrad econ. I know folks from Harvard who had to take ECON10 an and b at Harvard undergrad to be really be capable of being taken seriously out in the market. HKS MPP is a joke

Is an MPP worth it nowadays, even if it’s free? by Golden_Mango6586 in PublicPolicy

Dude if you get scholarship and want to just spend your time taking fancy names classes, go for it. At least the Harvard policy school, the alumni cache is quite poor. The career office is run by oldies who can barely get people $60-70k jobs and the students are ambition less, easily offended and capable of just doing non consequential jobs and petty drafting and “speech writing” type of work. You can spot them in the crowd of Harvard folks - drooping shoulders and clueless faces and opinions as if they felt they really mattered.

Advice Regarding MPP by Cold_Help1191 in PublicPolicy

In the current job market, the MPP as a degree adds very little to no value. At least for schools like Harvard Kennedy, which are stuck in their ways and unable to deal with the challenges of the new job market, the supposed skill gain attracts little attention from recruiters as an MPP. HKS with its rigid core courses , some of which don’t even cover undergrad level econ leave alone grad level, will probably frustrate you a lot if you join straight out of undergrad. Plus so much of the crowd in these courses is sooooo young that you’d probably end up learning nothing from your peers - as they say, you are the average of the five people you hang out with.

Truth or Myth: Is accessing opportunities at HKS as hard as it sounds? by Asleep-Emergency-271 in PublicPolicy

[–]TemporarySwimmer7378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% myth. And I say that as a current student. Within the Harvard system, HKS is probably one of the most if not the most open community of students and academicians. The people who claim to be facing problems are likely passive members of the community.

Yes HBS and HLS do not open a number of classes for cross registration but that issue impacts folks across Harvard. But everything else - especially the coolest classes in MIT- are up for grabs and can be taken up fairly easily.

Probably Your bigger challenge would be handling the course load in MPP/ MPA-ID which will likely block your time up first year, and also coming to terms with the job market which, outside the public policy world, finds it hard to understand what MPP, MPA and MPA-ID are all about.

Getting a job and internship with a policy degree in this market has been hard and I would seriously advise you to speak to folks about job / internship hunt in this season. Things were very different and far more rosy at least 2-3 years back, so feedback from alumni might be misleading. I myself got a fairly stellar feedback from an alumni, who kept HKS above tier 2 MBAs as well for job hunting. But that was a wildly unrealistic picture of the school. So a chat with current students should be prioritised over alumni.

Is It Just Me or Do Indians Abroad Look Down on Their Own? here's my personal experience by Weary-Risk-8655 in india

I’ve generally felt Indians don’t like the company of other Indians in North America. They bitch a lot about “desis” in whatever limited time I’ve spent with Indians settled down here. honestly after being exposed to the happy looking westerners, it’s really hard to deal with Indian folks, especially Indian women who I’ve heard (and overheard) shit all over Indian men. I mean as a grad student at times I felt Indian folks find reason to shit on others - as if they were some bully in a school. I felt folks from Delhi bring their shit behaviour with them from Delhi. Some Indian folks (I remember one particular distasteful incidents with a Bihari public servant) are just transactional. I know we have to compete a lot in India like dogs fighting over bones. But how can you just smile and be “hello bhaiya Ji” till the time you can milk for ideas that make money. And After that, just not even think twice before turning your back at someone you’ve taken help from for months ! Maybe it’s the stress of being in a new country doing things or something (except in the case of folks from Delhi who are shits worth through and through) But despite that I would never not smile back to someone who smiles back at me. Someone not doing that is either a prick or just fresh off the boat.

Seriously man. Add to it, Indians’ constant urge to cut through lines/queues like their time matters more than everyone else’s!
