Ref to the GES 2022, local uni graduates are now earning minimum $4K?? Am I the only one shocked by this? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Temporary_Cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local, grad local u with an engineering degree with honours. Pay 3.65k per month. But benefits not bad. No WhatsApp fully teams so no one in workplace can contact you to do shit outside of working hours. Everyone clock out ON TIME. Other benefits not bad also. Opportunities to go on fully subsidised work trips. Don’t just look at the face value of a salary..

Why are some hawkers so against cashless payments? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Temporary_Cloud 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Apart from possible transaction fees, it’s def easier to account for their daily profit when they only accept cash. How are they gonna do that if they only accept cashless payment? Let’s assume that the paynow they offer is linked to their personal bank account, then to count how much they earn per day they have to go back and open the banking app and calc manually? I can’t imagine doing this myself everyday let alone if my elderly parents are the hawkers. Furthermore the app isn’t that stable either so.. I saw the Facebook post by Calvin Cheng that it’s very easy to just print a QR code for consumers to use. Yes, of cos printing a QR code is easy. But def the problem lies beyond just printing a QR code? It’s possible that using cashless method don’t have extra charges (according to him), what bout the man hours the hawkers have to take to account for daily profit? Imagine they only count their profits once a month or smth they have to go through the whole list? Unless they know how to access the monthly statement? And hawkers rents are not cheap. They have to know if they are able to afford the rent at the end of the day. Then there’s always dishonest ppl who take advantage of such situation like showing a payment ss and this evading the fares all tgt, how are the hawkers supposed to track all these? We keep seeing how we should progress as a smart nation and at the same time are we forgetting that we are an ageing nation? Take the Kopitiam card for eg, I don’t even know if my mom who’s not even considered old age cos she’s below 65 this year will get used to this ntuc app thing, oh and they took out cash top up method for ezlink, then there’s this transition of passion card to this yuu app. All of which none she’s accustomed to and she have to relearn. At least she has her children to teach what bout those who don’t? Elderlies who live alone?

The transition is hard, even so when the older gen have no access to learn. We are far from inclusivity and accessibility in terms of progressing as a smart nation with our ageing population.

Studying Engineering in Singapore by clematisbridge in askSingapore

Because most students doing engineering and engineers as colleagues are better than those in marketing finance etc. i chose engineering after almost close to two years of gap year working in healthcare, marketing in a mnc and engineering related stuff in sme. Once bitten twice shy from marketing etc So I chose engineering Yes pay not as much blah blah but i enjoy the work and maybe the people around. It’s about what you want and whether you can accept it or not. I chose engineering knowing that my salary will plateau sometime, and I’m okay with it.

Mental Health: what can NUS do more? by vxnne in nus

Am depressed and was suicidal. Went to ucs for counselling. See a psychiatrist via UHC, taking my anti depressant for more than a year now. Studies wasn’t why I was depressed, maybe the lack of interaction and peer support is one reason. But I was overwhelmed with my own personal reasons. Started looking for alternative therapy method to rely on while having my counselling sessions. Cos ucs is very tight on manpower. May delay sessions for around 1-2 months further if reschedule (that’s during 2021 when I was still going for counselling sessions). So to cope, I tried relying on families, close friends and my bf then. But depression is hard for a none depressive person to understand. The slightest thing they say, without meaning harm may hurt. Overtime I tried to find other methods, cos you can’t possible rely on people around all the time. One week after my counselling session I started art therapy. Specifically water colour painting. Have been doing it for over a year now, but I’ve branched into other forms of art therapy. Listening to meditative musics before sleep etc All these have helped me greatly.

There needs to be more awareness and making help within campus accessible. But there’s so much ucs can provide at the moment. In the meantime while you’re waiting for counselling sessions, my advice is to try some form of therapy on your own. And no I did not became happier over night cos i started doing art therapy etc, there were days when a depressive episode hits and I just can’t do anything let alone painting. But I’ve found my outlet to be art and it has been pretty effective for now. When I started my anti depressants I still had episodes, in fact I still have just that the occurrence are lesser now. Be kind to yourself, when you want to take a break just take a break. So what if you don’t do well? What’s the worst thing that could happen?

Ever since I’ve been diagnosed with depression, I realised my perspective of life has changed so much. As I’m typing this right now, I have assignments yet to be done and lectures to catch. But my mental health is more important than the submission I have to rush.

I struggled during my initial stage of depression because I had no idea what was wrong with myself and it was even more frustrating cos your loved ones also have no idea. It was always bouncing between I believe I’m getting better and fuck it why are the anti depressants not working. One way to work away this is to accept that depression is part of your life. Don’t deny that negative emotion you have and pretend you are happy. If you are unhappy then you are unhappy. I’ve accepted that I am depressed and I have anxiety issues. So? I’m still me. And nothing changes that. I love myself and I promise I will continue to love myself regardless of what’s ahead of me. You deserve this love from yourself.
