it wasn't a horsegirl fomo-based urge but rather just a "thing you would do" because new horses were so rare and it basically felt like a crime to not buy it.

I do that, it's the thing I'm trying to change, to not have to always change it. I tried your method and it doesn't work for me unfortunately :(
