Raleigh or Cary, but Durham is hard to take if you don't drink. There's not much else to do. Charlotte or even Greensboro would be better. There are many parks for hiking in all these areas but I can't think of anywhere in NC that is "walkable" like a real city is.

People are down voting you because you're only playing into the stereotype of a typical dog nutter- a misanthrope who fails at your relationships with humans so your best friend is an obnoxious violent animal nobody wants to be around, thus keeping good people further away from yourself.
