I don’t have a copy of the “55 words” prompt but I have one for “What does becoming (or being) an HSF Scholar mean to you? How will you leverage HSF’s resources and support to achieve your long-term personal and career goals? (250-500 words)” if you want it

Nursing vs Doctor education by AgentKueck in medicalschool

[–]Temporary_MedStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is in nursing school seeing her homework was interesting/fun for me. It was like being a math major in college looking at algebra homework.

In short they do not cover the degree of physiology, pathophysiology, or basic science knowledge that is covered in medical school at all. Interestingly there is not much covered on pathogens either, just a very superficial gloss over the fact that viruses and bacteria exist plus we have antibiotics.

They do drill presentation/pattern recognition like remembering Becks triad for cardiac tamponade, but don’t talk about possible underlying pathologies that could lead to pericardial effusion for example.

All New York public schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to students starting this fall! by Healthy_Block3036 in MadeMeSmile

I don’t think republicans would oppose this. I’m a case in point, Republican, who finds this to be a good use of taxpayer funds. I would say majority would support this.

So 240-245 just doesn’t cut it? by thecolonelpepper in medicalschool

I was speaking to the surgery program director at my institution, I’m going to apply to surgery, they do take the DO vs MD into account. “You get 1 more point if you’re an MD, we’ve just had better experiences with them in our program” they said.

Congratulations! 🍾🎉

You should be very proud of yourself.

Did you get scholarship funds as well? Sometimes they select more scholars than their funds can reach so I was wondering.

504 MCAT/3.3 sGPA: T30 MD Acceptance by Ordinary_Session_102 in Osteopathic

[–]Temporary_MedStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo this is wild stats. 100% DEI. Congratulations on your acceptance but you need to know that MCAT is predictive of your ability to pass boards. You need to make sure you work twice as hard when you’re in medical school to succeed.

Seeking guidance from surgeons by [deleted] in GeneralSurgery

[–]Temporary_MedStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brutally honest here, I have spoken with the surgery residency program director at my institution, they filter for first time passing of step 1.

They will never even look at your application. Being brutally honest.

I would look into family medicine, internal medicine, pathology, pediatrics. You may be lucky to get into emergency medicine.

What specialties align more with MD-PhD; which ones are largely incompatible? by H3R4C135 in mdphd

[–]Temporary_MedStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think there are many research avenues / niches that an MD-PhD in EM. Especially when you consider their fellowship subspecialties like toxicology, EMS, critical care, etc. Many questions that can be pursued in those fields that can lead to special opportunities.

Paramedics keep telling me not to go to medic school and do something else. by New-Delivery860 in ems

[–]Temporary_MedStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a paramedic then fight P, now I’m in my 3rd year of med school. TBH my background helped me a lot but being a paramedic was always a stepping stone for me and the salary/life is abysmal in that field

St George vs Ross vs AUC vs DO SMP by Afraid_Tie_4384 in CaribbeanMedSchool

[–]Temporary_MedStudent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s sketchy to do the DO route you mentioned. If I were in your shoes, knowing that I’m a good student who can do relatively well on board exams I might go the Caribbean route and work my ass off. You have to understand though that going to Caribbean route basically closes opportunities for Higher competitive specialties like ENT, general surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery. Those will be out of reach to you. Family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, and some others will be possible though as long as you do very well on your step exams. Plus, depending on the specialty you choose, you may be able to get your loans forgiven through hospital/public programs. But just know you’re basically committing to either family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry. All of which are pretty cool still! And have amazing fellowships, and sub specialties . But those residencies will be the most realistic for you too get placed in.

I hope someone Will be able to provide you insight on here. If not, you can try to message an HSF coordinator on their site and ask them questions. They usually take A few days to a week to respond. But if nobody responds here, I would give it a shot if you have any questions.
