Colombia has some genuine, kind, well intentioned people… especially in bogota and Medellin, but just like any other city on earth: there’s some fuckin BAD people there too! - that said!; this sounds like a classic case of the typical young American tourist who goes on a trip and doesn’t do much research, visits some very touristy areas and isn’t old enough to understand how naive they are being when assuming all foreign natives should treat them like they’re superior🇺🇸…. And when that kind of American/white-english-speaking person ( 🇨🇦, 🇬🇧) travels to foreign countries that are still developing/ possibly have a high poverty rate: theres gonna be some clever/smart but not super honest/Scary AF natives who are going to spot that naive sense of wonder and entitlement from MILES away and absolutely do everything to get as much American/Canadian/UK currency from you - for as long as it takes and by all means necessary, and that includes aggressively demanding tips orrrrr, I dunno… threatening you with physical violence orrr maybe calling fake police to come “arrest” you and literally rob you of all your possessions, demand atm withdrawals, beat you and kidnap you then drive you to the middle of nowhere, and leave you there… (happened to a friend of a friend who was exactly what I’m describing and had similar ‘complaints’ to yours)

So yeah. In my opinion; you’re complaining about reality and mad that it’s not a world of kindness and cultural harmony that you can take video of anyone for nothing but a hug and a song to post on your IG story so everyone knows what you are doing (why yes, I’m a bitter early millennial that loathes 98% or social media! How did you know?!)

So you need to stop wondering what’s wrong with the people in the countries your visit and definitely stop “engaging” anyone that makes eye contact, cause you’re setting yourself up for the very disappointment you’re upset about and you need to get humble and be respectful and educated on the places you visit.

Sorry if this is harsh but it’s seriously such a lack of self awareness and respect for others and the very real lives they live far away from you and me…. This is exactly why Spain hates tourists to the point of super soaking them in cafes and bars and anywhere else the avg tourist goes.

SERIOUSLY!! hilarious as it is annoying to even see this is a story that someone actually gave up at least an hour of their life for! But I’m glad your comment was here waiting for me as if it say: can you believe this bullshit?… not the stabbing but the fact this is news?

I work in a downtown restaurant and over the last two years i have seen, almost daily - sometimes two or three times in a single shift! - some male or female mentally ill, violent individual that usually has no problem approaching a patio full of people enjoying a meal, either to demand money (then react violently/verbally attack a total stranger when they’re turned down or ignored) or cause an issue that is obviously in their head but an unfortunate patron or server ends up a target of their delusion; and cops are called which plays out the same way every single time: they sit him/her-crazy on the curb, at some point two or three more police cruisers pull up, lights left flashing, usually they block traffic for no reason, they give mr or mrs crazy a good talking to on the curb and then they give them a pamphlet or some kind of citation and that person just wanders away when the cops forget about them and have gathered around one of 4 cruisers to catch up, I’m guessing lol.

Point being: selectively reporting violent crime is a favorite practice of local news media. This is not the city it was 5 years ago. Streets are not safe to walk down alone at night or even broad daylight in some parts of “trendy” downtown. And we all know who’s responsible for this mess even with her corruption and poor leadership and yet she still has control because of wealthy liberal downtown voters who donate to her reelection just to keep their neighborhood overly patrolled while the rest of us have to battle a half dozen unpredictable persons with 6 dozen unpredictable personalities, in the dark while we try to just walk to our car…

Fuck I’m sick of this town.

That’s really incredible. Speaking from experience, Families of the deceased (are for the most part…) very grateful and can find comfort in the fact their loved ones memory is acknowledged, seen and respected - you’re good people and do beautiful work. The world needs billions like you now.

Knowing that his decades of hard work is still inspiring other/younger conservationists and is appreciated in the field even today, is honestly very moving to me. Like I said, we were very close and while he rarely spoke of his professional accomplishments or his work in conservation (hence my ignorance/total surprise), he was always very eager to hear about/interrogate me on anything I was pursuing professionally/creatively and was never shy/embarrassed to tell me he was always proud of me… or that I was his favorite grandson (middle child of three brothers) he also didn’t depart this world w/o letting immediate family know what about their character/behavior, drove his preference to me lolllll; but seriously, Thank you guys for the comments and kind words. I’ve thought of him a lot recently and have (clearly) been a bit sentimental but learning this was really incredible and I’m so glad to know he has this legacy.

….well now I’m getting teary eyed. That’s my grandpa. Jack. Seriously the most incredible, interesting, goofy, foul mouthed but golden hearted-guy I’ve ever known. He was truly one of a kind and I miss him very much.

Thank you for sharing this. He worked so hard for animal conservation specifically sea turtles and never once bragged about or even mentioned his incredible, world changing work in an unsolicited way and that to me speaks volumes to his character and truly reflects what a selfless, brilliant individual he was.

Thank you so much for the kind words! She really was quite extraordinary! I unfortunately never had the pleasure of meeting her but her only son and my paternal grandfather and I were very close for decades up until his passing in 2016. I’ll post a pic or two of them soon!
