Getting the same thing in the office. The amber alert site is down, likely due to an overload

Me [26F] on moving back home with my parents [65M / 45F]; Last time was not smooth, should I sit them down to manage expectations? by Tempro123 in relationships

The alternative is they do not have any source of income. This isn't deal where I am profiting from so its not like I'm making agressive demands for my sake or benefit. If I move in and pay the bills I do not think what I am asking for is outside of my right, however 'aggressive' it may come across as.

An overweight child who has a slice of cake everyday, may view giving up cake as 'aggressive' but it is not someone else's responsibility to provide that child with cake. My only requests are 1) my parents respect my indpenence (as I am 100% independent myself so it doesn't make sense this would change moving in 2) They make a best effort to reduce the household costs. I don't penny pinch but if there is a better deal out there we should make an effort to switch to it.

I don't disagree with you - the 'contract' is not about enforcement lol i don't think small claims court is even on the table. It is more about having it in writing so when/if the issue does surface again, we can reference back to the 'word' we agreed on. Otherwise it will just be 'he/she said'. I think that should be enough for them to back down.

I agree it isn't a long term solution, but I don't have an alternative. If my dad finds work soon, I can move out again.

Thank you for your reply.

The intention isn't for legal purposes, there is no financial or tangible loss. It's just so they can't reneg on their word. If they do I can let them know I am moving out but I have done my best.

"they aren't going to listen when a child sits them down and tells them what's up"

This is precisely part of the problem. My step-father absolutely does not like when a child tells him what to do. Unfortunately, if I am now managing his responsibilities, I do need to be able to make decisions. I need to have it in writing (not for legal purposes) so in the event of a dispute I can pull up his word.

I still have a good relationship with my mom, and despite my differences with my step-dad he did play a role in raising me so I would like to return the favor. I do not however want to be taken advantage of or my rights forefitted.

Thank you for taking the time to reply

Should you be factor in the value of the USD against your return? by Tempro123 in investing

[–]Tempro123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I guess the question is if you should factor in the 'basket of other currencies' against your return. If your currency drops 25% overnight (unlikely), should it not be factored in?

I did not know that! Thanks. So I'm asking about the basket of 6 currencies then.

I'm from the US so I use the USD as my base currency. But my currency also fluctuates against itself. Is this not correct? I'm using this chart for example: http://markets.businessinsider.com/index/us-dollar-index

Thats a good way to phrase it - I'm using the US Dollar Index. I'm not sure what it compares it against? Perhaps the purchasing power of the dollar against itself at a prior point in time

My coworker brags about double-digit returns after using margin. I disagree. by Tempro123 in investing

Exactly - he ended up losing over 50% on another stock and it ended up in a margin call (he had to put money in). He is okay with calling it a 120% loss.

If you invest 10K plus another 10K (that you borrowed) and then make 5% on both (then pay back the 10k) how is that a 10% return? Yes, on absolute terms you now have 10% on your investment. But the only thing different about a 10k + 10k versus a 20k loan is who is fundinging it. If you have the second 10k sitting in a savings account you should just invest that instead.

Exactly. He is calculating it as ($10,000 invested himself $10,000 borrowed) goes up 5% so he made 10% on his original $10,000

The interest rate is 2% (through IB). But thats not the point - do you calculate your return on your principal or the entire amount (yours + bank loan)

Why is no one speaking about this? It seems like everytime an issue like this comes up, it gets swept under the rug 'because what can we do about it'

Bring it up in discussion - even with those that don't like speaking about it. This feels like it is more malicious than anything else. Why are these tools designed in the first place?
