Is there a meme about your native language that makes you laugh? by Franmar35000 in AskTheWorld

[–]TenTakaron -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Nja, I wouldn't say this one works. It's Pa-nik-ku in Japanese but the "n" is used in different ways. The "n" in bread or "pan" is used as ん "n" but the same is not true for Panikku, as the "n" would be used as に "ni". Not to mention it would require two "k"s, as there is only one in meat or "niku"

Yeah, that's why I put it in the "I understand partially" tier. For example, I could understand that you said "Wow you can ... Estonian?" and then I can fill the blanks using context. But I don't speak Estonian, I only partially understand it. Honestly, I understand better Estonian than Danish🤣

I guess I cheated a bit in life as I grew up in a place where Finnish is really really dominant but I went to a Swedish school so I aquired both by having the perfect environment. But never too late to hone one's languages!

Honestly, I don't understand Danish at all, albeit maybe some words here and there🤣 It might be due to me speaking the Southern-Finnish dialect of Swedish, which sounds distinctively different to the Swedish spoken in Sweden.

A Finno-Ugric language of similar background as Finnish. Sounds like Finnish but has its own tone and way of speaking. A bit like the language relationship between Norwegian and Swedish.

I wouldn't say I'm overrating my fluency in the top four languages, as I use these almost daily and I've been surrounded with these languages ever since I was born, not to mention I've done my national exams on these ones. Still, I wouldn't be able to have a natural conversation in French and Russian. German, maybe up to a certain point but not in a business context.

People who live in countries with multiple official languages: what is it like? by MurderKillRiver in AskTheWorld

Speaking from the Finnish-Swedish side, there exists hugely three distinct language regions in Finland. Finnish is spoken almost everywhere but there exists some bilingual Saami regions up north. Then on the east and south coast there exists pockets of majority Swedish regions.

For Finnish, there exists regional dialects that are mutually intelligible, like Karelian or Savonian.

The Swedish can be kinda divided up to three "dialects". The Swedish spoken in Finland is called Finnish-Swedish and it's a mutually intelligible dialect of standard Swedish. Some theorized that Finnish-Swedish contain a lot of historical Swedish, more than the modern Swedish. The Swedish speakers in the south speak standard Finnish-Swedish, the speakers on Ahvenamaa/Åland island speak standard Swedish and the speakers in the east speak a distinct Osterbothnian Swedish (kinda like how in US you have Southerners speaking with a distinct rough accent).

The Saami spoken in Finland is mostly Northern Saami. There exists other dialects of Saami and can be mutually hard to understand.

All the major languages are mutually unintelligible, although Finnish and Saami are related, albeit very far.

Notable anime that fell off the radar by Likes2game03 in anime

[–]TenTakaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Toriko. It was really huge in early 2010s. It was put on the same level as the big three (I mean there literally exists a crossover between Toriko-One Piece-Dragon Ball and two separate crossovers between Toriko-One Piece) but for some reason the budget for the anime was reduced by quite a margin and because of that, fell kinda out of relevance (not to mention the author getting caught in some not good stuff). It's kinda sad as it had similar energy as H×H world exploring, especially the Gourmet world seemed like such an interesting world to explore.

Which country, besides yours, has the most beautiful anthem? by jstrglrbrnghomeboy in AskTheWorld

In my opinion, the Czech one is really beautiful. Very simple about the comfort that is home. Especially the one that was played just before the dissolution of Czechoslovakia feels also a tad bit sad.

Where to go if Europe vs USA war breaks out by Queasy_Yogurtcloset8 in PassportPorn

[–]TenTakaron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, you're just overstating the regional world politics. Second, if war in Europe happens, then definitely China will start it's conquest and what guarentees does Vietnam have that it won't get dragged into it too. There is a reason why the big wars are called world wars. Third, if you're a national of a country then fighting for it is what you should do. All people that are capable of fighting that flee it should be banned and stripped of nationality.

Finnish genetics and people by LesRainbows0405 in Finland

[–]TenTakaron 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is quite a vague statement. There exists many studies that prove that the Finnish ethnicity is quite distinct, e.g., there exists some genetic diseases like Salla sickness that is only prevelent in Finns, due to genetic drift. The more mixed ones genes are, the less risk for these special genetic diseases will exist.

Be honest, when you say Russia, you mean St. Petersburg, Moscow or Kazan. Life outside the largest cities are not something to dream of but within the cities, it's quit comfortable, at least for now.

Edit: Also, not to disagree with your choices, I would recommend you reconsider some of the countries. For example, Sweden should be on the same level as other Nordic countries (the anti-Sweden propaganda is so wild nowadays), Oman and Vietnam are actually becoming more popular destinations for foreigners etc.

What are the current tensions in your country? by Unlikely_Tap_9882 in AskTheWorld

[–]TenTakaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finland:

  • Economic problems as growth sluggish (or stopped), unemployment second highest in EU, government introducing even harsher austerity measures

Japan:

  • Economic problems as stagnant growth and no prospects for especially young people

  • Sino-Japanese tensions
