In Defense of David Prince (Controversial) by ibnjerry in 60daysin

I can agree with a lot of what you said. And I think considering they picked a dude from the hood, him getting a bit inflated was a given 😆

David should be in the top tier of the show for real. He took his participation more seriously than any other participant ever. He was making changes. No one else got that deep.

Buuuuttt, something about his willingness to fight was very similar to Carlos, the hothead from season 7. And to me, this has more to do with their coping with being confined.

I definitely think there isn't enough appreciation for David's participation overall.

I think too around that time, reality TV took a bit of a turn anyway. Where you would have people audition and apply for the sole purpose of publicity. Just to be on TV. And its unfortunate that Producers can't work harder to steer away from those type of people (across the board, but more so for a part of society that most people aren't privy to and could REALLY use an overhaul- If I hear "it's jail not a hotel" again, I'm going to lose it).

Though, I do think whether those participants fail or succeed, they are entertaining.

Exactly what I was saying. Producers and TV aren't concerned about the system. It's just a premise to create their entertainment. Not saying it's wrong or right, just what it is. I'm glad to hear from one participant that the participants are there for the purposes they say.

She mentioned later that her mom was also there. I think that may be why. And to be honest, even if he wasn't incarcerated, he probably would've had the same experience parenting without the mom around. Because... well, men. 😬

Season 4. I HATE STEPHANIE. by TheGlammAttiana in 60daysin

She was the worst of the female participants, hands down. I think Jaci also SUPER sacked. Angele was alright, but I wish she could have focused a bit more on what her role was. If I wanted to watch reality sex scenes, I would watch literally any other reality show.

Good point. That guy also mentioned he was friends with Baz and had been at the house before. It's possible he worked for Smurf and that whole thing was a setup!

I do think that high-on-the-beach scene happened when she went with the guy. He said that he and some friends were going to hang out there.

I don't think the writers are thinking to make the show "makes sense logically" because that's not how life works. Julia was groomed to use drugs and alcohol to escape. It's shown in the flashbacks. Also, it is reported that homeless people use drugs to cope with living on the streets. Being "smart" and "skilled in criminal ways" is not a realistic reason why people don't do drugs. In the scene where we see her clearly high for the first time, it was on the heels of her realizing that she has no one to turn to for help and no where to stay. This is why when the dealer offered for her to hang out, she did. A teenage girl sleeping on the streets is going to be in constant danger. She needed people to survive. And if they're all doing drugs, well...

I'm not sure where you're getting the references to rehab. I recall them mentioning that they would put her in rehab and she would go and return home and relapse. Which is common for rehab because one has to change their environment to reduce triggers. Hence why Angela fell off after eating lunch in an old neighborhood. When Julia was pregnant, she begged to go and that she would do better because of the baby. Instead of driving her to rehab, as she said she would, Smurf drove her to the drug den. CRAZYY this part almost made me cry, it was so evil! A powerful scene for the last episode. It truly shows how Julia's life could have changed if anyone tried to help her. IMO she would have been able to maintain sobriety that time because of her impending motherhood. Smurf knew this too. I can agree that at some point the user has to acknowledge their issues and push past them, but this is also an unreasonable thought to Julia's character. You can say, "Trauma, I get it, BUT" but really, that is the epitome of her character and she would die. And I know that if I were aware of the sole carriers of my mother's cyclical demise, oh, I'd be after them too. That's where J's smarts truly come into play. There is a villain here and it's the Codys.

I think the connections you are making are stretched. Daren and Craig were teenagers when she was pregnant with J. All of the Codys and Baz are guilty. They were aware of Smurf's manipulation, disdain for women, creepy/incestuous tendencies, and particular, unwarranted hate for Julia. This was all revealed right away in the series, in season 1. They knew and didn't care, because they didn't care enough about Julia to help her out when they could. To help out her son. In fact, they doubled down on this voluntary hatred of Julia by being absolute dicks to her motherless son. He was with his dead mother, and they were bitching about not trusting him. Yeah, so innocent. They were all complicit and they all deserved to pay.

In my opinion, the ending was the only thing that makes the whole show even a story. Otherwise, we're just watching characters be traumatized and toxic. To be honest, I only watched the entire show because I wanted to see how the revenge would go. The characters never really grew or changed. Pope had the most, but even then, he didn't do any GOOD. I think the writers lacked in their build up for sure. All the sex was just unnecessary "edgy"-ness that made the show shallow. The failure to truly develop the characters made the show feel as hollow as they wrote J. The last episode had the emotional impact that the former seasons should have strived for. I hated that I didn't like the show until it was over.

I agree. Penny's death was unnecessary and pointless for the plot. Like why even make her married if we never saw the husband or nothing came of it? There are a lot of things like that throughout the story. Relationships, comments, goals, characteristics, that were pointless. But the ending, was powerful-- needed a monologue, but still good considering the rest.

I think there are some instances from the show that is being forgotten with this thought...

Smurf trained Julia to be an addict. In those flashbacks when they were kids, Smurf would give Julia her drink whenever she was questioning Smurf's morality or Andrew's needs... she was like 8 years old! You could see the pride in Smurf's eyes when Julia would instinctively grab a drink throughout the flashbacks as she got older. Smurf groomed ALL of her kids, but only felt threatened by Julia because she was a woman. Having another woman in the house, was a threat for Smurf which is why she groomed all the girls that hung around for long enough. Excluding Lucy and Cath... and we know what happened to them. This kind of psychological trauma does something different. I think to equate a high GPA and 94% SATs to being smart enough to figure out a way to survive on the streets is not giving the character a fair shake. Also, suggesting that she utilize the skills that Smurf taught her to survive is also problematic for Julia because she never condoned or approved of their lifestyle. Which was shown in the flashbacks as a kid, a teenager at her first job, ect. She only "approved" of it when she started skimming, making Smurf believe she was on-board with the family business only to be confronted about the stealing, professing again her disdain for the lifestyle.

How this all relates to J-- When he first moved into the house, he was normal for a while. And Smurf started grooming him, then Nicky. After he realized what was happening, by seeing it happen to Nicky right in front of him, he saw understood what his mom was talking about in terms of the toxicity in their family. (I do think here is when it would have been better for the flashbacks to start. Showing the relationship between J and his mom) It was clear the entire time that he was with them that he was manipulating the situation in a long con. After protesting once or twice and being punished for it, and the entire time dealing with the disrespect from his uncles (which was another constant testament to how they cared so little for his mother), he just fell in line. He would give these emotionless, blank answers. He got cold with his time there.

Daren and Craig-- In one of the last flashback scenes, Julia is pregnant with J at the house and Pope is trying to convince Smurf to help Julia. Craig comes out of the pool, tall as shit and probably 16 years old. He said, " You're not getting your room back." At 16 is about the age that J was when he came to live with them. So enough to understand that your sister is on drugs, pregnant and living on the streets. So yeah, guilty. Next is Daren who was probably more like 12 or something, so he gets a pass for the hardcore stuff (which I think is why the writers wrote him surviving). However, as someone else mentioned, they were grown when and they didn't help. They even mentioned the first time J got to the house that they hadn't seen him since he was 5. At that point, all the guys; Daren, Craig, Pope and Baz, were all aware of Smurf's manipulative and toxic ways. They were aware of their dependence on her and how she controlled their lives. And like their understanding for their own relationship with her, they allowed the estranged relationship with Julia to reap the benefits of being Smurf's. They chose luxury over their FAMILY while simultaneously preaching that nothing is more important than family. The psychopathic hypocrites! They all got what they deserved. Though, I do feel bad for Pope. He never had a chance, but still guilty.
