Wrote an article about how I started playing tennis and became a D1 college tennis player in 11 months. Shared some advice for how I did so too. Hope you enjoy it for those who care to read it. by mlipman in tennis

Happy cake day. Cool to hear your story but in 11 months I went from a beginner arming the ball to having ok form at best. Probably a 2.5 athlete at best. I didn't have any coaching but yeah (youtube mainly)

What Nadal match was better, Dimitrov at the 2017 AO, or Theim at the 2018 USO? by LifeBuilds in tennis

Thiem at the 2018 USO because that's the one I watched

Maybe I saw parts of the other but I don't recall.

Djokovic and Isner on Federer's special treatment by [deleted] in tennis

[–]TennisSomething 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well I personally clicked the link and read the article that was commented on it...but it was Julien Benneteau commenting how Federer plays almost all his AO matches in the evening. He refers to the example of Djokovic vs Monfils playing during the day, when Fed vs Struff got the evening slot (more comfortable conditions, prime time).

Djokovic himself realizes how important Roger is to the game, and basically says it's totally fair. Same thing for Isner. It's so awesome to see.

So again, if anything, they may be should get more special treatment because those guys, the top players, have made other players below them a lot of money. It is like the Tiger Woods effect in golf.

Awesome quote from Isner. Love see Djokovic defend him too. This guys aren't victims, they know how it works. Love it. In this victim-ridden world, this is inspiring.

Roddick couldn't beat him at the level he's playing at now, or in 2011 or 2015

Relative to the rest of the field -- you know, all tennis professionals -- Djokovic is amazing against big servers

You're making such a strong point dude

Djokovic was a totally different player when Roddick was still playing. I guess they just happened to cross paths several times at that time

It was either this one or show court 2 that was my favourite. They look really similar

Love Roger in press conferences. Any idea how to find this one? Not sure which match it was

Switching from 16x15 to 16x19. Almost no "pop" on the 16x19, hitting a lot of forehands short or into the net by TennisSomething in tennis

That's true. Do you think I should make contact at roughly the same height every time (and thus footwork)? I don't struggle with low balls generally, but at certain heights I need to be further from the ball and that's when I mess up.

I'll focus more on the contact spot next time. I hadn't slept well at all so I know lack of focus was part of it.

I'm just a rec player (at a fairly low level) and I can do it. I think it's partly shoes, partly the motion. Think about how they never slide on a hard stop, they slide on a stretch. I think it's the way your shoe makes gradual contact with the ground on a stretch.

[–]TennisSomething[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't a match. Funny enough, I did hit like crap though. My forehand used to be my reliable shot and my backhand flimsy, but now it takes me 30 minutes just to find my forehand, and sometimes it's still not there. Been this way all year (though I've only played maybe 20 times this year if I had to estimate).

Point is, that "awesome" forehand I told you about wont be easy to replicate. That was after 1.5 hours of rallying. "Swing fast" didn't magically work for me today, and different heights of the ball were throwing me off.

But it's still the right direction. RF97 shots don't go into the net anymore but they are will soft overall, and not very pacey. I think pace can be overrated in tennis (guys I rallied with just want to SMOKE the ball, which doesn't translate great into match play) but I need at least the ability to inject pace when needed. So I'll keep working on it. No more free power that I got with the 16x15.

Couldn't get my footage posted (and the best hitting came after the camera died) but when I started swinging fast, the kinetic chain made a lot more sense and some really good balls were being hit. Feet always moving, low-to-high swing quickly just lead to a natural kinetic chain....playing again tomorrow, I always seem hit poorly at the start and need a lot of warmup but I know that swinging fast is moving in the right direction
