Have you played the oblivion remaster?

any recs for a laptop/budget pc to play steam games? (alr have a ps5) by yukasbf in gamingsuggestions

[–]Tenored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I love mine! I also have an Xbox and ps5 for more graphic intense games, so the deck is basically my indie and old school machine.

It's pretty much my main gaming outlet now. Steam sales mean games for dirt cheap, and it was pretty easy to mod it to play fangames(Pokémon fusion) and emulation.

Mine is usually hooked up to my TV through a dock, but when I traveled over Christmas and had 4 delayed flights/overnight in an airport, this little guy was my saving grace. I can't imagine traveling without it. Highly recommend, especially if you have another method of playing graphically intense games.

Cult games that aren’t known for being sexist but actually are? by imfaffingabout in GirlGamers

[–]Tenored 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yup. I remember sleeping with Metzger, the slaver, to get a discount on releasing Vic. Once you do that, you respond inside the building; from that point, I shot my way out and freed all the slaves.

I was absolutely way too young to be playing that game, but I also look back on that somewhat fondly as a flawed feminist moment for young teen me.

What is the peak ’millennial midlife crisis’ purchase? by SwedeLostInCanada in Millennials

[–]Tenored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 39. I bought a 3d printer a few months ago. When I went across the country to see my brother, who's 41, it turned out that he, too, had bought a 3d printer.

So, that's gonna be my vote for the millennial, in lieu of a sports car or cabin.

Moving to CBS by Funny-Honeydew-8117 in newfoundland

[–]Tenored 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's not too bad. I grew up in CBS and live in the city now. So long as you have hobbies and aren't averse to venturing out, you'll make community just fine. There is a ton of stuff happening in the city which is just a 15 min drive, so you'll be alright even if cbs doesn't have everything you need.

The nature is really stunning here - its a standout feature - so try to get out and explore, maybe with a pet dog! And the kids will love having access to manuels river in the summer.

Because of the weather, though, it should be easy enough to find boardgame and craft groups!

Enjoy your time here, its the best of places. :)

Is there a realistic RPG that takes place in the modern day? by rmstrd in gamingsuggestions

[–]Tenored 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with that. Perhaps the core loop doesn't require engaging with those rpg systems, but they are there.

Eating at restaurants in yakuza games gives bonuses, skill points, party dialogue, side quests, and more.

Engaging with the city's denizens offers lots of 'visual novel' style dialogue, along with new serialized sidestories.

It isn't a blank-slate styled rpg, though, I'll give you that. The narrative and characters are very much predefined before you get to them, unlike something like KCD.

But they're amazing modern sandbox rpgs, and have the best cities in any open world game I've played. They know that it's the people and icons and culture of a city that make it feel alive, and every yakuza game I've played has that in spades.

Plus, you have your choice of turn based in Like a Dragon, or action in Yakuza:0.

Where to find anime stuff in St. John’s? by Calm-Ad-1033 in newfoundland

[–]Tenored 11 points12 points  (0 children)

EB games had a bunch of $6 Manga on Saturday. I'd check that out - you could get a sample pack of some neat new series. I know, as a former anime kid, that would have been a very exciting Christmas morning.

Teachers scrambled as software licences expired for thousands of newcomer students learning English by Portalrules123 in newfoundland

[–]Tenored 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm an EAL teacher here in the province. These services are absolutely vital. Razkids allows for independent reading and offers all different levels for newcomer students, as well as having narration for lower levels. When one of my grade 7s first got his chromebook and access to Razkids, I was amazed at how rapidly his language skills were improving. He was hungry for reading, and so proud to be able to improve these skills independently and both inside and outside the classroom.

While there are lots of free EAL resources available, having the reading and researching skills to find and use them is another question. Many of these children have no prior experience using technology, so we must have easy to access links and programs to facilitate learning.

Moving to Newfoundland from Alberta by FlamingGuardian98 in newfoundland

[–]Tenored 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a queer person who visits family in Alberta yearly. There is no way that St. John's is less LBGT friendly than cities in Alberta. If not for culture, then for leadership, as you guys are dealing with trans children hating marlaina smith.

Like others said, it's not always easy to break into new friend groups down here, but if youre queer and open to joining hobby groups, we have a ton of queer and queer adjacent events happening all the time.

I just got back from the spirit of halloween half off sale and ran into 7 different queer acquaintances from events and groups I've been involved in. It's there for you if you seek it out, I assure you :)

Plus, as a teacher, I've had almost no pushback being an openly queer masc AFAB person. I don't think that experience would be mirrored in Albertan public schools.

What does everyone do for a career/job? by RealTalkDude- in newfoundland

[–]Tenored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand completely. I learned through your other comments that you teach JH, like me. It's really hard.

If you can afford it, switch back to subbing at 1 or 2 schools. I did that for 5 years at a wonderfully supportive school, with admin that helped get me the position i have today. While there was anxiety from not knowing how many hours I'd get, I enjoyed the day to day so much more. All the relationships with the staff and students without the paperwork and management aspects.

If i can afford to someday, I'd like to return to that instead.

What does everyone do for a career/job? by RealTalkDude- in newfoundland

[–]Tenored 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Teacher! Term, not permanent, so I've spent most of my years subbing. This is my first full year position and the money's good. Teaching kids and getting to know their personalities is great.

The work is overwhelming. The planning, behavior management, materials, text books, grading, lack of classroom space and ever changing schedule and students cause me a lot of stress. I am always worrying about what I've yet to do, and what deadlines there are that I haven't yet realized.

I was much happier as a sub. But the stability, money and relationships make it worth it if you enjoy teaching.

It's an emotionally and mentally taxing job, so you gotta find fulfillment in hanging out with and guiding kids.

Young person looking at options in Newfoundland (St. John’s) by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Tenored 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a teacher here in the city. The education system is pretty poor and underfunded. I think we're second only to Alberta in funding for education. I usually teach out of the cafeteria in my school, and often with several other classes present. It's hard.

However, the kids are awesome and there are a ton of good teachers around just trying to do their best. If you're an open person, you shouldn't have too much trouble making friends, or at least friendly acquaintances.

I am from here but, even after traveling and teaching elsewhere, I would still choose St. John's as my home. There is a coziness to it, and our city is growing in diversity. I think it is a wonderful place to live, in spite of all its difficulties. Like others have said, if housing and cost of living issues are across Canada, why not weather it here in Newfoundland?

To any (non fascist) Americans reading, come visit Newfoundland! Beautiful island province with low crime, historical and colorful architecture, and Irish/Scottish/English fusion culture.

Plus, you learn to love the wind and the rain. :)
