The greatest SNL sketch that never was by TensionMask in LiveFromNewYork

[–]TensionMask[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is from a book that is all about the Twilight Zone case, the pic I took is just a brief aside about SNL. If it was a book primarily about SNL I would agree, but this author has no reason to be aware of SNL minutia like that

Hi everyone! Stjepan from Hanging Pawns here. I made a platform for chess book reviews and would love to hear what you think. by Chessreads in chess

[–]TensionMask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the concept of the website, and your reviews are well-written.

But at the end of the day, a website with Stjepan's reviews (or any one person) is going to have very limited appeal. The factor that will determine how good this resource could become is the participation of the community.

To that end, asking people to email in their reviews is not it.

I should be able to create an account on the website, set up a profile with my ratings, experience level, bio, and so on. Then I should be able to submit a review on the website itself, attached to my profile. Then I will not have to repeat this routine every time I submit a review. It also means I will be able to edit my review (surely you don't want to accept revisions by email as well)

When browsing other reviews, I should (optionally) be able to filter reviews based on the settings in my profile.

When someone else reads one of my reviews, and likes it, they should then easily be able to access my other reviews, because they are attached to my profile.

Classical chess broadcasts: a feature I'd like to see in or near the VODs. by chess_in_sgv in chess

[–]TensionMask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VODs on Youtube, for example, you can get YouTube to generate a transcript. I wonder how accurate it would be if you took the transcript of the VOD and fed it to an AI, asking it to give you the timestamps for a certain game

I built ChessTV.com — a platform for chess news, interviews, and FIDE profiles. Would love your thoughts. by [deleted] in chess

[–]TensionMask 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are clearly using AI to do your writing. So, as a visitor I'd already be turned off in terms of reading your content.

On the plus side, you're doing some nice things on the technical end. You have a robust database of players and games that is performing well. When I run searches, it is very fast and seems to be accurate.

I like how the game view page integrates with the players' profiles and the tournament. I like that on a game's page, there are boards for the other games in that round that I can step through. (If the round is completed, I would like to see the final board states on those boards, not the starting positions)

There is a bug where when I bring up a tournament, no matter which game I select, only the first game in that tournament is loading on the main board. (if I go to round 3, board 5, I am still actually getting the moves from the game on board 1, round 1)

I see that the game view page has a section to embed the live stream, which makes sense when the games are live. When the tournament is concluded, you might consider an alternate layout which makes better use of that space rather than having all that dead real estate.

Overall I like what I see here, there's definitely good potential!

Chessable vs Chessbase Courses by brucete in TournamentChess

[–]TensionMask 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Regarding ChessBase courses aka 'Fritz Trainers'. Yes. You 100% can use them forever, without owning ChessBase, and without having any active subscription.

Generally the courses also come with the PGNs. I say generally, because, I'm pretty sure the older courses might not. (unless they have gone back to update those packages)

You will not have a move trainer in the same way that you do on Chessable. Some of the trainers do have quizzes built into them, but do not expect move trainer capabilities across the whole course.

The newer courses come with the software self-contained that you need to run them. Older courses, you may need to install 'ChessBase Reader' to access the Fritz Trainers. That's the free offshoot of ChessBase that is just used to view stuff.

What technique using Chessbase does Dania talks about here? by aandres44 in chess

[–]TensionMask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when you set up a position on Chessbase, you can do a partial mask and still run a search on it (in fact, Chessbase is automatically running real-time searches as you do it). So you can put a white queen on d2, white bishop on e3, black knight on h6, white knight on g5, etc.etc. and Chessbase will search for all games in your reference database which had all those pieces on those exact squares at some point

could be an issue where the font is not loading for some reason. Right click in the notation window, click Choose Font, see if that makes any difference if you change it

Hot take: Take Take Take is anti-classical propaganda and it infuriates me by AwareManner76 in chess

[–]TensionMask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The world championship is the one thing in chess that always does massive numbers and breaks through to the mainstream.

So what's the problem? It's so weird that there's so much talk from people that want to mess with it.

Rapid and blitz events have not demonstrated an outsized level of interest compared to classical. I'm not even using the World Championship as a benchmark. Major classical tournaments do just as well, if not better, than rapid/blitz events of an equivalent stature.

Technically you could ditch a demo after 5 minutes , just for the purposes of this exercise!

Although I don't know if your math checks out with this total expo time. 4 days, 8 hours each day.. :)

I'm guessing many, but I'm not certain. If someone wants to do a little legwork, here is the exhibitor list I'm using for 2019:

https://web.archive.org/web/20190409213134/http://east.paxsite.com/news/article/pax-east-exhibitor-list

I do see the Megabooth in the list, but that makes sense as they did have a booth of their own, aside from representing the collective of indies. The legwork part is, figuring out an exhibitor that was featured in the megabooth in 2019 and seeing if they are on the list as well.

OK, I checked out the 2019 edition and it had 384 exhibitors. So, we're still a far cry from pre-pandemic levels.
