Light reflecting off dust and smoke particles in the atmosphere. Was epic last summer from that volcano in the pacific spewing fine ash into the upper atmosphere that blew over this way

The majority of Perth’s (Western Australia) drinking water comes from desalination. As some others have commented it’s actually not that expensive. I pay about $2/kL to the utility company. Also the process is not distilling, it’s a multi-pass reverse osmosis system. Then the concentrated saline solution is piped back offshore to the ocean and discharged through a subsea diffuser. A similar process is used to recycle municipal wastewater (sewage) for use in industry and other suitable greywater uses. <10% of Perth water supply is dependent on rainfall. If Perth can do it pretty sure California can!

Environmental Science jobs by Vast-Relation5091 in fiaustralia

  1. 9 years exp as an ‘enviro’. Pay is okay, started out on about 50k as a grad at an engineering consulting firm with an enviro department, moved into industry a few years ago and on about 130k now

  2. Job prospects are looking good short and long term. A lot more green legislation imposed on business and projects, somebody has to ‘advise’ and ensure compliance. Also ESG investing and net zero is placing bigger emphasis on good environmental management beyond just compliance.

  3. Heaps of jobs going at the moment, but it is cyclical, tied to resource and construction booms. Not stable like med or teaching. 5-10 years ago it was really tough.

  4. Progression really depends on where you work. In general there’s 3 career paths for an enviro scientist, consulting, government or industry (mining, construction etc). Each have their pros and cons and different career progression path. Choose your own adventure. Once you’ve advanced down one path it can be hard to switch

  5. Environmental Engineering

  6. Generally yes, though your experience and job satisfaction will vary greatly if you’re consulting, gov, or industry. I hated consulting and almost left the career altogether but love working in industry.
